Two New Police Officers Sworn In

Chief Steven D. Cherry has announced the appointment of Lucas Doney of Bound Brook and Greg Carter of Vernon to the position of Probationary Police Officers.  At the February 25th meeting of the Borough Council, Mayor John Van Keuren publicly sworn in Doney and Carter as Glen Rock’s newest probationary officers as Councilman Michael O'Hagen (member of the Public Safety Committee) and Chief Steven Cherry looked on. With their appointment, the number of sworn officers returns to twenty-three. P.O. Doney and P.O. Carter were hired after undergoing a selection and interview process with the members of the Public Safety Committee. They were hired to replace P.O. Shane Broglia who accepted employment with the Ridgewood Police Department a few months ago and also in anticipation of Chief Cherry's retirement in May.

Doney, who is 31 years old, graduated from the John Stamler Police Academy in Union, New Jersey and comes to Glen Rock having served as a Police Officer for N.J.I.T for the past 2 years.  He currently resides in Bound Brook with his wife Jennifer.  He grew up in Bloomsbury, New Jersey where he graduated from Phillipsburg High School.  Doney is a graduate of Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania where he earned a B.A. in psychology.

Carter, who is 32 years old, graduated the Essex County Police Academy, where he took part in the “alternate route” program.  This program allows qualified candidates to attend the Police Academy at their own expense, with no guarantee of employment by a police agency, in order to become certified as a Police Officer.  Prior to going to the Police Academy, Carter was a sales manager for a local fire equipment company.  He is a graduate of Sussex County Community College where he earned a associates degree in Criminal Justice.  Carter currently resides in Vernon with his wife Traci and son Bradley.  Carter is also currently the Chief of the Vernon Fire Department.

Because they are already certified by the Police Training Commission, Doney and Carter will only be required to spend a minimal period of time becoming familiar with the operations of the GRPD and then will be working on their own.
