Intoxicated Driver Becomes Violent in Police HQ

At 3:53 a.m. , Sgt. Daniel Dour came across an occupied vehicle parked on Waldron Avenue .  Both the vehicle owner and the passenger appeared to be intoxicated.  Upon questioning the passenger, he indicated that he lived on Waldron Avenue and that they would be entering his residence without driving the car.  The officer did not observe the owner operating the vehicle.  Both men apparently walked towards the house and the officer left the area.

Approximately 10 minutes later Sgt. Dour was traveling southbound on Maple Avenue , approaching Waldron, and he observed the same vehicle being operated in a careless manner, almost striking a parked car.  Sgt. The man was transported to Police HQ where he continued to show signs of mood swings, being cooperative at moments and uncooperative at others.  Officers were in the process of impounding his vehicle and arranging for a sober friend or family member to take custody of the subject when he became combative and a scuffle ensued in Police HQ.  During the course of that scuffle P.O. James Calaski received a minor injury.  The prisoner was subdued with the assistance of Sgt. Dour and P.O. Eric Reamy.  Due to the prisoner’s unknown level of intoxication and numerous psychiatric prescription medications that he was determined to be on, he was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center because officers believed he was a danger to himself and incapable of making rational decisions.  The man was charged with D.W.I., careless driving, refusal to submit to a Breathalyzer tests, operating a vehicle with a damages windshield and resisting arrest.
