Transit Officer Breaks up Disturbance

At 10:59 a.m. , NJ Transit P.O. Ron Leminelli interceded in a dispute in front of a video store on Rock Road near the Bergen County Line RR Tracks.  P.O. Mike Ciaramella, P.O. George Erlich and P.O. Arthur Faber responded to back up the transit officer.  It was determined that a 41-year-old Hawthorne man and his 16-year-old son had become involved in a dispute with the 22-year-old store clerk over ongoing hostilities between the clerk and the son.  The father alleged that he was threatened and punched in the chest by the store clerk.  Everyone involved was advised of their right to sign a complaint with the Municipal Court and were dispersed from the area.

Officers Respond to Fight behind Central School

At 11:50 p.m. , P.O. Chris Mc Inerney and P.O. Eric Reamy responded to a report of a disturbance behind Central School and found three people who had been injured in a fight.  During the course of a three-day investigation, P.O. Mc Inerney determined that four 15-year-olds from Glen Rock, Hawthorne and Saddle Brook had been accosted by a group of Glen Rock High School seniors during which time they were threatened, assaulted and urinated on.  As a result of the investigation two 17-year-olds were charged with one count of simple assault each and one 17-year-old was charged with harassment and urinating in public.  A fourth 17-year-old was submitted to the station house adjustment program for underage consumption of alcohol.  Four other 17-year-olds were detained and questioned but there were insufficient grounds to file charges against them.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 8:52 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Mike Ciaramella determined that the driver, a 25-year-old Neptune man was wanted on an active warrant out of the Lake Como Municipal Court.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he could arrange for $ 200 bail to be posted.

Garage Burglary on Boulevard

At 8:59 a.m. , a resident of the 300 block of The Boulevard reported a burglary to his unlocked detached garage sometime between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the 26th.  Items reported stolen include tools and a bicycle.  It is believed that this incident may be related to the pursuit of a stolen vehicle on the 26th.

Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle ends with Foot Chase

At 6:11 p.m. , P.O. Scott Mc Govern ran a computer check on a motor vehicle, which turned out to be stolen from Paterson .  The officer activated his lights; however the vehicle sped off northbound on Maple Avenue , turned left onto Glen Avenue , and then made a sudden turn into a resident’s driveway.  The vehicle proceeded to the rear of the house and onto the grass coming to a stop on top of a row of bushes.  Two male occupants exited the vehicle and ran from the scene onto Rodney Street . P.O. Mc Govern pursued them on foot through back yards but lost sight of them.  The Bergen County Police K-9 Squad as well as officers from Fair Lawn responded to assist.  Subsequently a 40-year-old Paterson man was apprehended in the area of De Boer Drive and was identified by P.O. Mc Govern as having been the passenger in the stolen vehicle.  The suspect was arrested for resisting arrest.  He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending confirmation of his identity.  The identity and whereabouts of the driver remains under investigation.

Woman Arrested for Possession of “Crack” Pipe

At 12:52 a.m. , P.O. Eric Reamy stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of Harristown Road and Hamilton Avenue for erratic driving.  When approached both the driver, a 46-year-old Paramus man, and the passenger, a 21-year-old Paterson woman, gave officers conflicting accounts to where they were coming from.  P.O. James Calaski asked the passenger to exit the vehicle and when she did, he observed a pack of cigarettes with the top ripped off and a crack pipe sticking out on the passenger seat.  The woman was arrested and charged with Possession of Narcotics Paraphernalia and the driver was issued a motor vehicle summons for failure to stop before making a right turn on red.

Officers Respond to Fight in Street

At 10:20 p.m. , P.O. Eric Reamy, P.O. James Calaski, P.O. Robert Wojtecki and P.O. Matthew Stanislao were dispatched to a 9-1-1 report of a fight in the street on Cornelia Place .  After breaking up a disturbance between six Glen Rock males ages 17 to 46, officers determined that hostilities between a 17-year-old Glen Rock male and an 18-year-old Glen Rock male over a $ 200 debt erupted into a tumultuous dispute in the middle of the street.  A 17-year-old male was arrested by P.O. Calaski for disorderly conduct, underage consumption of alcohol and disturbing the peace.  The intoxicated youth was held at police headquarters until he could be turned over to his parents.  The matter has been forwarded to Juvenile Court in Hackensack . 

The other individuals present were not charged because they were attempting to cooperate with the responding officers and bring the out of control 17-year-old into custody.  Another 17-year-old Glen Rock male was issued a motor vehicle summons for being a provisional driver with an excessive number of passengers.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 4:23 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 56-year-old Roselle woman was wanted on active warrants out of the Roselle Municipal Court.  The woman was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until she could arrange for $ 600 bail to be posted.

Paterson Woman Arrested During MV Stop

At 1:04 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 32-year-old Paterson woman was wanted on active warrants out of Paterson .  The woman was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until she could arrange for $ 200 bail to be posted.

Driver Arrested for Insurance Fraud & Drug Possession

At 10:30 a.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Bryan Scott determined that the driver, a 28-year-old Paterson woman, produced a fraudulent insurance card and was in possession of marijuana under 50 grams.  The woman was also found to have three active warrants for her arrest out of East Orange and Paterson .  The woman was arrested and transported to the Glen Rock Police lock-up where she was processed and released on bail.  The case will be forwarded to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for Grand Jury action.

Woman Arrested at Police HQ

At 5:40 p.m. , a 46-year-old Haledon woman, wanted on outstanding warrants out of Paterson , surrendered herself at Glen Rock Police HQ.  She posted $ 120 bail and was released.  It is unknown why she chose to surrender herself in Glen Rock as opposed to Haledon or Paterson.

Teen Struck by Car

At 7:27 a.m. a 15-year-old girl walking to school was struck by a motor vehicle as she crossed Rock Road near Berkeley Place .  The teen was transported to Valley Hospital by ambulance where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

Midland Park Woman Victim of Credit Fraud

At 11:15 a.m. a 19-year-old Midland Park woman reported that two bank accounts, one checking and one savings, had been opened in her name at the Bank of America without her knowledge.  Bank officials are attempting to determine where and when these accounts were opened and by whom.

CAPT. BERTRAM W. KERRIGAN

The Glen Rock Police Department regrets to announce the death of retired Captain Bertram W. Kerrigan who passed away December 15, 2005 .  Captain Kerrigan served the Glen Rock Police Department with honor and distinction from September 1st 1958 until his retirement on May 1st 1989 .  He was a charter member, Past President and Silver Life Member of Glen Rock PBA Local # 110.  Captain Kerrigan was also a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy – 129th Session. 

Following his retirement Captain Kerrigan was Director of Security at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck , NJ and then served as Chief Police Instructor at the Bergen County Police and Fire Academy .  He continued serving the Borough of Glen Rock as Emergency Management Coordinator up until the time of his passing.

CVS Store Evacuated

At 1:55 p.m. , Police, Ambulance Fire and County HazMat personnel were dispatched to the CVS store on Rock Road on a report of an unknown odor that caused respiratory distress in four employees.  Officers evacuated the store while members of the Fire Department checked the air for carbon monoxide.  The Bergen County HazMat team found negative results for hazardous materials as well.  One employee was transported to the hospital and three others refused medical attention.

Borough citizens are reminded that crossing residents’ lawns and tampering with holiday decorations is against the law and violators are subject to arrest.

Officer Discovers Building on Fire

At 12:42 a.m. , while on routine patrol, P.O. George Erlich observed a heavy smoke condition coming from the roof of 235-237 Rock Road .  Upon checking closer he observed that the smoke was coming from the Bagel Gourmet.  Responding firefighters made entry to the building and determined that there was a working structure fire.  The Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department, working in cooperation with Firefighters from Ridgewood , Fair Lawn and Midland Park were able to promptly bring the fire under control.  The Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded.

After the blazed was extinguished, the Fire Department determined that the cause was a large gas-operated water kettle which had malfunctioned.  Bagel Gourmet sustained water damage, smoke damage and structural damage to the floor beams.  Neighboring businesses, European Meat Market and a dental office, sustained smoke damage.

Fire Officials have credited P.O. Erlich for detecting the fire early enough to save the building.

Resident Victim of Credit Fraud

At 5:46 p.m. , a 30-year-old Glen Rock resident reported that she detected fraudulent use on her ATM debit card.  This is one of many reports which are being filed each month concerning identity theft and credit fraud.  In most cases these crimes are committed in other jurisdictions, often in other countries, by actors who carefully shield their identity. Often difficult to determine the source of the crime, the US Postal Inspectors, F.B.I. and Secret Service are devoting considerable resources to these investigations.   

Residents should be alert that credit fraud and identity theft crimes have become widespread.  For information on how to protect yourself, click on CRIME TIPS.

Shoplifter Caught by Manager at Food Basics

At 4 p.m. , Sgt. Jon Miller, P.O. Matthew Stanislao and P.O. Anna Marie Mattina responded to a report of shoplifting at Food Basics on Lincoln Avenue .  A 40-year-old Paterson man was reported by store employees as having shoplifted a $59.95 bottle of Johnny Walker Black and was identified to police along with his wife.  The bottle was recovered and the store manager decided to ban the man from the store rather than sign a complaint.

Officers Locate Runaway Child

At 2:30 p.m. , P.O. Scott Mc Govern was flagged down in the parking lot of Food Basics on Lincoln Avenue by a Prospect Park woman who reported that her eight-year old grandson had runaway with no jacket on following a temper tantrum.  Officers from Glen Rock, Hawthorne and Prospect Park searched the area.  The boy was subsequently located on 8th Street on the Hawthorne/Prospect Park border and turned over to his grandmother.

Carol Court Resident Reports Broken Window.

At 6:15 p.m. , a Carol Court resident reported that someone had broken her kitchen window with an orange while she was out walking her dog.  There were no witnesses.

Routine Motor Vehicle Stop Results in Arrest

At 1:02 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Scott Mc Govern determined that the driver, a 48-year-old Paterson man, had an outstanding criminal warrant for his arrest out of Passaic County Superior Court for violating a domestic violence restraining order.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up and subsequently turned over to officers from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.

Car Damaged on Ridge Road

At 10 a.m. , a Ridge Road resident reported that someone had keyed the side of his 2005 Toyota while it was parked on the street for three days.  The incident reportedly occurred between November 24th and November 27th.  There are no known witnesses.

Bench Damaged at Library

At 7:18 a.m. , an official from the Glen Rock Public Library reported that someone had damaged the bench in the rear of the building.  This reportedly occurred over the weekend, there are no known witnesses.

Paterson Man Arrested for Exhibiting Forged Insurance Card

At 9:30 p.m. , P.O. Scott Mc Govern arrested a 28-year-old Paterson man for exhibiting a forged insurance card.  The man was also issued a motor vehicle summons for permitting the operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.  The arrest came following a November 10th motor vehicle stop where P.O. Mc Govern was presented with an insurance card that did not appear legitimate.  At the time the insurance company’s business office was closed and verification of coverage could not be obtained.   Det. Dean Ackermann was later able to contact the company and confirm that the card was a forgery.  An arrest warrant was obtained and the suspect agreed to surrender himself to the officers.  The man was later released on his own recognizance and the matter has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for Grand Jury Action.

At 8:30 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 35-year-old Paterson man, had two outstanding warrants out of Paterson .  The driver was unable to post bail and was turned over to the Paterson Police Department.

Pompton Lakes Man Arrested During MV Stop

At 12:41 a.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Chris Mc Inerney determined that the driver, a 33-year-old Pompton Lakes man, had an outstanding warrant out of Paterson .  The driver was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $ 350 bail and was released.

Car Vandalized on Boulevard

At 6:30 a.m. , a resident on the 200 block of Boulevard reported that the rear and side window of her vehicle had been smashed by a thrown brick sometime during the night.  The brick also damaged the steering wheel of the car.  A follow-up investigation failed to disclose any witnesses or evidence that would support probable cause for an arrest.

Scott Mc Govern determined that the driver, a 28-year-old Paterson man, was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Wyckoff .  The driver was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $ 500 bail and was released.

Hawthorne Man Arrested for DWI

At 5:40 p.m. , officers responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Van Winkle Avenue .  A subsequent investigation by P.O. Frank Riggio and P.O. Eric Reamy revealed that the drive, a 51-year-old Hawthorne man, was intoxicated.  The man was arrested for D.W.I. as well as issued a motor vehicle summons for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.  He was later released to the custody of a sober family member.

At 3:56 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 36-year-old Paterson woman, had an outstanding warrant out of Paterson .  The driver was held in the Glen Rock Police lock-up until she posted $ 447 bail.

Mother Reports Threats

At 12 p.m. , the mother of a 13-year-old boy reported that she found threats against her child posted on another child’s web page on a website called “myspace”.  The Detective Bureau is investigating this matter in conjunction with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Computer Crimes Squad.

Runaway Juvenile Located on Bergen Street

At 12 a.m. , Lt. Fred Stahman and P.O. Chris Mc Inerney assisted the Maywood Police Department in locating a runaway 17-year-old male who was found at a Bergen Street home with some friends.  He was taken back to police headquarters where he was subsequently released to his parents.

Juvenile “Prank” Turns into Serious Offense

Det. Dean Ackermann and P.O. Frank Riggio, with the assistance of the Glen Rock Middle School principal, identified six Glen Rock 13-year-old girls as having been involved in a vandalism incident on “Goosey Night” - October 30th.  A Glen Rock Middle School teacher had his car vandalized with eggs, soap, nail polish and permanent marker.  Investigation also found that a swastika was drawn on his driveway with soap.  In addition it was determined that this offense was related to an incident on Thurston Terrace where nail polish had been poured on a 2004 Toyota parked on the street causing damage in excess of $783.

Both victims were concerned about the seriousness of the matter since the drawing of the swastika constituted a bias crime, but were insistent that the matter be handled informally.  The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office agreed and the girls were entered into a stationhouse adjustment program.

At 8:13 a.m. ., during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Bryan Scott determined that the driver, a 24-year-old Edgewater man, was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Fair Lawn for $335 and out of Edgewater for $89.  The driver was unable to post bail and was turned over to the Fair Lawn Police Dept.

Glen Rock Woman Arrested During MV Stop

At 9:10 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Matthew Stanislao determined that the driver, a 39-year-old Glen Rock woman, was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Paterson .  The woman was unable to post $545 bail and was turned over to the Paterson Police Department who transported her to the Paterson City Jail.

Glen Rock Man Arrested on Support Warrant

At 9:20 p.m. Lt. Fred Stahman and P.O. Scott Mc Govern arrested a 45-year-old Glen Rock man on an outstanding warrant out of Bergen County Superior court for failure to make support payment.  The man was unable to post bail and was turned over to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department.

During the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 39-year-old Haskell man, had an outstanding warrant out of Paterson .  Unable to post bail in the amount of $ 452, the man was turned over to the Paterson Police Department.

Juvenile Observed on Public Street with Alcohol

At 10:07 p.m. , a Glen Rock juvenile male was arrested and charged with consumption of alcohol in a public place by P.O. Robert Wojtecki.  The juvenile was released to his parents pending an appearance in juvenile court.  Residents are reminded that possession of open alcohol in any public place, regardless of age, is unlawful in Glen Rock.

Midland Park man Arrested after Running from Motor Vehicle Stop.

At 12:05 p.m. , P.O. James Calaski attempted to make a motor vehicle stop but the vehicle attempted to elude him.  When the officer caught up to the vehicle on Van Winkle Avenue in Hawthorne , the driver ran away on foot.  Paperwork in the car, as well as video footage on the patrol car video system, led officers from Glen Rock, Hawthorne , Ridgewood and Midland Park to a Midland Park address where P.O. Calaski found and arrested the driver.  The man was charged with eluding a Police Officer and issued several motor vehicle summonses.  Officers also determined that he had an outstanding $350 warrant out of Paterson .  The driver was held in the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he posted $ 2,000 bail.

Councilman Michael O’Hagan, Mayor John Van Keuren, Lt. Frederick Stahman, pinning on his new badge is Lt. Stahman’s mother Chris Stahman.  

Mayor John Van Keuren formally swore in Frederick Stahman, a member of the Glen Rock Police Department since 1980, as Lieutenant at the October 26th 2005 public meeting of the Mayor and Council.  Also taking part in the ceremony were Councilman Michael O’Hagan (Chairman of the Public Safety Committee) and Police Chief Steven D. Cherry.

Lieutenant Stahman began is career in 1979 as a Police Officer in Garfield .  After joining the GRPD he served as a Patrol Officer for twelve years prior to being promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 1992.  In 1999 he was made Detective Sergeant and placed in charge of criminal investigations. 

Lt. Stahman, who had been placed in charge of the Patrol Division, also serves as the department’s Homeland Security Officer.  He has received several awards and citations during his career from the P.B.A. and various police agencies and is a member of the Police Honor Legion of New Jersey.

Driver Arrested for Insurance Fraud

At 4:45 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop on Rt. 208, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 38-year old Paterson man, was driving without a driver’s license in an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.  The man presented P.O. Riggio with an insurance card which was determined to be a forgery.  The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Police HQ where he was issued motor vehicle summonses and charged criminally with Producing a Fraudulent Motor Vehicle Insurance Card.  The matter has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for Grand Jury action.

At 5 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 43-year-old Union City man was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Clifton .  The driver was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $500 bail.

Ridgewood Resident Reports Criminal Mischief

At 4 p.m., a Ridgewood resident reported that his windshield had been broken while his car was parked in Glen Rock three weeks in the past.  The complainant further alleged that after the windshield was repaired it was struck again, but not broken on October 15th.

He claims that both incidents occurred while the vehicle was parked on Radburn Road between 5-5:30 PM and that the damages were done with a pellet from a BB gun.

At 6 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Bryan Scott determined that the driver, a 53-year-old Paterson man was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Passaic County Superior Court.  The man was unable to post $ 3,500 bail and was turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.

Forged Checks under Investigation

Detectives are currently investigating reports of a woman going to local banks in Glen Rock, Ridgewood , Hawthorne, Ho Ho Kus and other surrounding areas and cashing checks from a business that does not exist.  According to banking officials the checks look very realistic and are always made out in amounts just shy of $ 1,000.00.

At 10:45 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. James Calaski determined that the driver, a 28-year-old Paterson woman, was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Burlington .  The driver was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until she was able to post $174 bail.

At 3:45 p.m. , a routine motor vehicle stop resulted in the arrest of a 48-year-old man on an outstanding civil contempt warrant.  The man was turned over to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department.

Speeding Vehicle Turns out to be Stolen

At 12:54 a.m. , while on routine patrol, P.O. Eric Reamy observed a vehicle speeding on Harristown Road .  After stopping the vehicle, P.O. Reamy determined that it had been stolen out of Parsippany-Troy Hills.  The driver, a 37-year-old Elizabeth man, was arrested for receiving stolen property and issued five motor vehicle summonses. The suspect was also found to be wanted on several outstanding warrants.  Unable to post a cumulative bail of over $100,000.00, the man was remanded to be Bergen County Jail.

At 6:45 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio and P.O. Bryan Scott determined that the driver, a 21-year-old Bergenfield man was wanted on an outstanding warrant.  The driver was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $600 bail.

Teens Run from Officer, Leave Evidence Behind

At 9 p.m. , P.O. Scott Mc Govern was checking the vicinity of Sycamore Park when he saw a group of juvenile males running away, leaving behind bicycles and several 40oz. bottles of “Malt Liquor”.  The liquor and bicycles were held as evidence at police headquarters.  Aided by the fact that two of the juveniles attempted to file false police reports, claiming that their bicycles had been stolen, P.O. Mc Govern was able to identify the six Glen Rock 16- and 17-year-olds who were involved.  Complaints have been filed against each youth and the matter has been referred to Juvenile Court in Hackensack .

Routine Motor Vehicle Stop Results in Arrest

During the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Passaic County for failing to pay child support.  The suspect, who was unable to post bail, was held a the Glen Rock Police lock-up and later turned over to officers from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.

Criminal Mischief Report on Marlboro Road

A Marlboro Road homeowner reported that during the overnight hours someone had uprooted bushes on the property and thrown them onto the lawn.  Although the resident was home, there were no witnesses.

Resident Reports Identity Theft

A local resident reported being the victim of identity theft.  An unknown person had reportedly used the resident’s credit cards to charge more than $4,000 worth of merchandise.

The Glen Rock Police Department receives numerous reports of this nature each year.  In many cases it is impossible to determine where the victim’s credit information was stolen or who committed the offense.  Often these offenses are committed in from out of state or even outside the country.  Residents are urged to exercise caution when giving out personal information, such as credit card or Social Security Numbers over the phone or internet.

Garret Merselis Promoted to Captain

Garrett Merselis, a member of the Glen Rock Police Department since 1983, was formally sworn in as Captain of Police by Mayor John Van Keuren at the September 28th 2005 public meeting of the Mayor and Council. His official appointment was effective on September 2nd.  Also taking part in the ceremony were Councilman Michael O’Hagan (Chairman of the Public Safety Committee), Police Chief Steven D. Cherry, Captain Merselis’ wife Nancy and his son Daniel. 

Captain Merselis began is career in 1980 as a Police Officer in neighboring Hawthorne .  After joining the GRPD he served as a Patrol Officer for seven years prior to being promoted to Detective in 1987.  In 1998 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and returned to the Patrol Division as a tour supervisor and Traffic Safety Officer.  In 2004 he was promoted to Lieutenant of the Patrol Division. 

In the 1980’s Captain Merselis was a member of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Task Force. In 1993 Captain Merselis became one of Glen Rock’s original DARE instructors and was later trained by the Virginia State Police as a DARE mentor. He has also taught and certified other officers in the DARE curriculum at the Bergen County Police Academy .

Headlights Stolen in Commuter Lot

At 6:24 p.m. , P.O. Rick Jackson investigated a report that two headlights were stolen from a 2004 Lexus which had been parked in the West Plaza Extension Commuter Parking Lot.  The theft occurred between 11 a.m. and 6:15 p.m.    The headlights are valued at $529.00.

Detective Arrests Teen Following Death Threat

Det. Dean Ackermann arrested a 14-year-old Glen Rock girl on charges of making a terroristic threat and criminal mischief.  The arrest occurred following a report from officials at the Glen Rock Middle School that the juvenile had written a death threat against another girl on a desk.   The hostilities between the two girls stems from another matter which remains under investigation.  The case has been referred to Juvenile Court in Hackensack .

Car Fire on Maple Avenue

At 9:02 a.m. , at the corner of Maple and Hamilton Avenues officers came upon a car that was on fire.  A 1993 Subaru wagon had been traveling south on Maple when the driver, a 22 –year-old Ridgewood man, pulled over to the side of the road after smoke filled the interior of his car.  By the time the Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department arrived, the engine compartment was ablaze.  The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no reported injuries.

Criminal Mischief Reported at the Arboretum.  

At 2 p.m. , a member of the Friends of the Arboretum reported that the tool shed at the Arboretum had been damaged.  Someone broke windows, slashed window screens and broke the plexiglass on a display case.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 5:10 p.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Anna Marie Mattina ran a computer check for warrants on the driver, a 26-year-old Paterson man.  The check revealed that he was wanted by the Passaic County Superior Court for failure to pay child support.  The man was unable to post $ 1,235 bail and was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up where he was later turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.

Saddle River Man Arrested on Additional Lewdness Charges

On August 28, P.O. Frank Riggio and P.O. Fred Jackson arrested a 28-year-old Saddle River man, and charged him with Lewdness.  The man was identified by a 14-year-old Glen Rock female who reported that he had exposed his genitals to her. 

Following an investigation by Det. Dean Ackermann, the same suspect was charged with two additional acts of lewdness, both having occurred in the Central Business District, dating back to May of this year.  Det. Ackermann and P.O. Jackson, assisted by members of the Saddle River Police Department, arrested the man at his home and transported him to Glen Rock Police HQ where he was processed and held until bail was posted by a family member.

Elderly Woman Reports Wallet Stolen

At 4 p.m. Sgt. Daniel Dour and P.O. Anna Marie Mattina responded to a report from the Food Basics store on Lincoln Avenue that a 75-year-old Hawthorne woman had her wallet, which contained $ 373 in cash and personal identification, removed from her purse. Officer reviewed surveillance tapes but were unable to identify any suspects.  The matter is still under investigation.

Parents Report Teen Alcohol Party

At 8:28 a.m. , P.O. Anna Marie Mattina responded to a report from parents that while they were out to dinner the previous night their 14-year-old daughter had hosted a drinking party.  P.O. Mattina subsequently arrested two teens, 14-year-old boy and girl, who were charged with Underage Possession and/or Consumption of Alcohol.  Nine other juveniles were identified as being present and their parents were notified.  The case has been referred to Juvenile Court in Hackensack .

At 1:31 p.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Scott Mc Govern ran a computer check for warrants on the driver, a 36-year-old Little Ferry man.  The check revealed that there was an active warrant for the driver out of Irvington .  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $120 bail.

Driver Found to Have Multiple Warrants

At 5:10 p.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Fred Jackson ran a computer check for warrants on the driver, a 29-year-old Hawthorne man.  The check revealed that he was wanted on an outstanding criminal warrant for $ 5,000 out of Haledon, as well as motor vehicle warrants out of Hawthorne and Paterson.  The man was unable to post a total of $ 5,950 bail and was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up where he was later turned over to the Haledon Police Department.

Captain William T. Kealy Retires

After 31 years of service to the Glen Rock Police Department, Capt. Kealy finished his last day of work on Thursday August 4th.  He will officially retire on September 1st, 2005.  Captain Kealy’s departure comes after a very successful career in which he served the Borough as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Detective Supervisor, Senior Patrol Supervisor and finally as the departments executive officer.  The members of the Glen Rock Police Department wish Captain Kealy, his wife Irene, daughters and grandchildren many years of health and happiness.

At 12:10 a.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Robert Wojtecki ran a computer check for warrants on the driver, a 19-year-old North Haledon man.  The check revealed that there was an active warrant for the driver out of Hackensack .  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he was able to post $90 bail.

Food Basics Employee Arrested for Theft

At 8:45 p.m. , officers patrolling the Food Basics parking lot on Lincoln Avenue found a new bottle of Bacardi Rum on the loading dock.  After reviewing the surveillance tape, store officials determined that the bottle was left there by a 16-year-old employee from Prospect Park .  The employee was arrested by P.O. Scott Mc Govern for theft.  The matter has been referred to Juvenile Court in Passaic County .

At 12:43 p.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Robert Wojtecki ran a computer check for warrants on the driver, a 24-year-old Hawthorne man.  The check revealed that there was an active warrant for the driver out of Saddle Brook.  The man was unable to post $ 725 bail and was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up where he was later turned over to Saddle Brook Police.

Man Arrested for Lewdness on Rock Road

At 4:21 p.m. , P.O. Frank Riggio and P.O. Fred Jackson responded to a report that a lewd act was in progress on Rock Road .  The Officers located the suspect, a 28-year-old Saddle River man, and charged him with Lewdness.  The man was identified by a 14-year-old Glen Rock female who reported that he had exposed his genitals to her.

20 Year-old Arrested During Motor Vehicle Stop

At 12:20 a.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop on Maple Avenue near Ackerman Avenue , P.O. Adam Pyatak arrested a 20-year-old Glen Rock man for Underage Possession of Alcohol after finding him sitting in the back seat with two bottle of beer at his feet.  The car was impounded for motor vehicle violations including being unregistered and uninsured.

Bryan Scott Appointed to the G.R.P.D.

Chief Steven D. Cherry announced the appointment today of Bryan Scott of Harrington Park .   At August 24th meeting of the Borough Council, Mayor John Van Keuren publicly sworn in Scott as Glen Rock’s newest probationary officer as Councilman Mike O’Hagan (Chairman of the Public Safety Committee) and Chief Steven Cherry looked on. With his appointment, the number of sworn officers returns to twenty-one. P.O. Scott hired after undergoing a selection and interview process with the members of the Public Safety Committee. He was hired to replace Captain William Kealy who, after thirty-one years of service to the community will retire on September 1, 2005

Scott, who is 27 years old, is a recent graduate of the Somerset County Police Academy where he took part in the “alternate route” program.  This program allows qualified candidates to attend the Police Academy at their own expense, with no guarantee of employment by a police agency, in order to become certified as a Police Officer. 

P.O. Scott is the son of former Harrington Park Police Sergeant Frank Scott III., and the brother of Paramus Police Detective Frank Scott IV.  Prior to entering the police academy Bryan worked for Sony BMG in Lyndhurst and was a student of criminal justice at Fairleigh Dickinson University.   

Because he is already certified by the Police Training Commission, Scott will only be required to spend a minimal period of time becoming familiar with the operations of the GRPD and then will be working on his own.

Food Basics Reports Shoplifting

At 9 p.m. , the manager of Food Basics on Lincoln Avenue reported that someone shoplifted several bottles of liquor from the store.  According to the report, when the manager confronted the man, he got into a waiting car and fled the scene.  The reported value of the stolen alcohol was $ 460.00.  Detectives are attempting to enhance video surveillance tapes from the store in order to identify the alleged actor.

Intoxicated Juvenile Arrested

At 11 p.m. , officers were dispatched to a report of a 15-year-old juvenile in a semiconscious intoxicated state behind Coleman School .  Members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated the victim and transported him to Valley Hospital for further treatment.  P.O Chris Mc Inerney later charged the juvenile with consumption of Alcoholic Beverages While Underage.

Residential Burglary

At 9:45 a.m. a P.S.E.& G. meter reader reported a burglary on the 500 block of Prospect Street .  Investigation found that sometime between August 13-16 someone had forcibly entered through the front door of the home.  It has not been determined whether anything is missing.

Storm Wreaks Havoc

Beginning around 6 p.m. officers responded to numerous storm-related 9-1-1 calls during and after a violent storm.  Reports included flooding conditions on roadways, disabled and abandoned cars, fallen trees, fallen wires, and a house fire on South Highwood Avenue . 

Two motorists who disregarded a marker showing five feet of water beneath the Maple Avenue railroad trestle were rescued from their floating car by P.O. Matthew Stanislao, assisted by P.O. Eric Reamy and P.O. Frederick Jackson.  The officers entered the murky water to pull out the panicky driver and passenger who refused to abandon their slowly sinking car.  The car, which sank, was hauled out once the water had receded. 

Moments after the water rescue officers were dispatched to a house fire on South Highwood Avenue .  The fire, which began in a storage area on the second floor of the home, started as a result of a lighting strike.  The house was damaged extensively.

During the height of the storm related emergencies, a Central Dispatch communication tower was struck by lighting and public safety communications with central was knocked out for a short period. 

Two days after the storm officers were still fielding called and in-person inquiries related to damage caused by the storm.

Downed Power Line Causes Blackout.

At 9:24 p.m. , officers were dispatched to a utilities emergency on Rock Road between Maple Avenue and Harding Road .  Investigation found that a Verizon employee was working on lines in a bucket truck when an electrical line broke, barely missing him as it came down on his unoccupied truck.  The incident resulted in the loss of power to businesses and residents in the immediate area.  PSE & G as well as the Glen Rock Fire Department responded. Power was restored later in the day; however, several businesses reported damages due to the sudden surge of electricity.

Vehicles Vandalized on
Jerome Avenue

A resident of Jerome Avenue reported that someone had put deep scratches with a sharp object on the side doors of two vehicles parking in their driveway.  There were no witnesses to the incident.  Detectives conducted a follow up investigation however no evidence existed to support any arrests.

Right Turns on Red now Restricted at Rock & Glen

As requested by residents and pedestrians, the Glen Rock mayor and Borough Council passed a resolution requesting the County of Bergen to prohibit right turns at the red light at the intersection of Rock Road and Glen Avenue Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. through 6 p.m. This action is in direct response to several reported incidents when drivers making a right turn did not see a pedestrian in the crosswalk, creating a dangerous condition. 

Drivers should be aware that making a right on red where prohibited is a moving violation.  The penalty is a fine between $50 and $200 and points are assessed by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Home Improvement Fraud Reported

A Thurston Terrace resident reported that she had given $2,800 to a contractor, “Above and Beyond” of Hawthorne , and he had left the job without completing the work.  Detectives are attempting to assist her in locating the contractor; however, the matter appears to be civil in nature not criminal.

Theft of Service at Local Gas Station

At 11 a.m. , the Exxon station on the corner of Maple Avenue and Highwood Avenue reported that a customer had left without paying for a gas purchase.  Officers were able to locate the person on Franklin Avenue in Ridgewood and escorted him back to the gas station where he paid for his purchase.  The station owner declined to file charges.

Officers Respond to Storm Related Emergencies

At 5:30 p.m. , the Glen Rock Police Department received numerous storm related 9-1-1 calls.  Fallen trees caused property damages to homes on Leone Court and Winslow Terrace, as well as the Ridgewood Water Pollution Control plant.  No injuries were reported. Officers also responded to approximately 12 burglar alarms which had been activated by the storm.

Two Police Officers Appointed to the G.R.P.D.

Scott Mc Govern and Frederick Jackson.  At July 27th meeting of the Borough Council, Council President Terry Moore publicly sworn in Mc Govern and Jackson as Glen Rock’s newest probationary officers as Councilman Mike O’Hagan (Chairman of the Public Safety Committee) looked on. With their appointments, the number of sworn officers returns to twenty-one. Both were hired after undergoing a selection and interview process with the members of the Public Safety Committee. P.O. Mc Govern was hired to replace Sergeant Thomas Mc Crea who, after twenty-one years of service to the community and 26 years as a law enforcement officer, retired on July 1, 2005 .  P.O. Jackson was hired to replace P.O. Michael O’Shea who left the Glen Rock Police Department to accept a position as a Special Agent with the D.E.A. (Federal Drug Enforcement Administration).    

Mc Govern, who is 30 years old, has been a police officer with the New Jersey Transit Police Department for 2 ½ years.  He began his involvement with law enforcement in Park Ridge , NJ as a reserve police officer, where he attained the rank of Captain before becoming a Transit officer.

Jackson, who is 23 years old, has served with the United States Coast Guard for five years where he attained full certification as a Law Enforcement Officer.  His most recent assignment was as a Federal Law Enforcement Boarding Team member where his duties included boarding foreign vessels of high interest, maritime homeland security patrols, armed security of ferry and dinner cruise boats and security escorts of cruise ships.  

Because both officers are already certified by the Police Training Commission, they will only be required to spend a minimal period of time becoming familiar with the operations of the GRPD and then will be working on their own.

G.R.P.D. Bids Farewell to Sgt. Tom Mc Crea and P.O. Mike O’Shea.

June 2005 marked the last working days of veteran Glen Rock Officers Tom Mc Crea and Mike O’Shea.  Sgt. Mc Crea, who began his career with the New Jersey State Police in 1979, retired on July 1, 2005 after 21 years of service to Glen Rock and 26 years as a law enforcement officer.  P.O. Mike O’Shea, who began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department, served Glen Rock for the last 2 ½ years.  Mike left the GRPD on June 24th to accept a position as a Special Agent with the D.E.A. (Federal Drug Enforcement Administration). 

 The members of the Glen Rock Police Department wish both Tom and Mike good health and success.

Juveniles Detained for Criminal Mischief
 

Officers were dispatched to a report of a group of juveniles putting a substance in bags and lighting the bags on fire a Byrd School .  The mulch beside the school caught fire but did not damage the building.  The juveniles were taken to Police HQ where they were released to their parents.

Haskell Woman Arrested for Credit Fraud

At 9 a.m. officers were dispatched to a dispute at a Lincoln Avenue dry cleaning business. P.O. Eric Reamy subsequently arrested an 18-year-old Haskell woman who was charged with Criminal Attempt, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card and Receiving Stolen Property.  It was also determined that the woman had an outstanding warrant for her arrest out of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.  Her bail was set at $ 7,500 and she was transported to the Bergen County Jail. 

Following an investigation by D/Sgt. Fred Stahman additional charges will be filed against the actor by Detectives from Wyckoff .

Car Seats Mistaken for Curbside Rubbish

 At 11:54 a.m. a Delmar Avenue resident reported that two $800 car seats, which had been taken out of his car and left unattended on the lawn, were missing.  It was later determined that the seats, which were left near the curb, were mistaken for curbside rubbish.  The seats were returned undamaged shortly after the “culprit” realized her mistake.   

 

ACKERMAN AVE. GAS MAIN REPLACEMENT - BEGINNING MONDAY, JULY 18, 2005 - EXPECT DELAYS

PSE & G will be installing a new gas main on Ackerman Avenue from Prospect Street north the to Ridgewood line.  The project is expected to last approximately two months.  During this time there will be detours and road closures.  Motorist can expect delays and should plan alternate routes.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

 At 10 p.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 30-year-old Fair Lawn man, had an outstanding warrant out of Weehawken for failure to appear in court.   The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until $450.00 bail was posted.

Detective Arrests Fugitive

 At 10:30 a.m. Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman observed an occupied suspicious vehicle on a residential side street.  Investigation determined that the driver, a 36-year-old Elmwood Park man, was wanted by the Morris County Prosecutors Office for failing to appear in court on drug charges.  The man was arrested and turned over the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Theft from Unlocked Car Reported

At 7 p.m. a resident reported that his unlocked car was entered while it was parked in the Glen Rock High School parking lot and that a wallet containing an unspecified amount of cash was removed.

Teen Defecates In Town Pool
 

An official from the Glen Rock Municipal Pool reported that someone had defecated in the deep end of the pool during the Wednesday Night Something event.  The suspect, a teenaged Glen Rock resident, was identified to police.  The matter was reviewed by the Detective Bureau and further action may be pending.

Midland Park Man Arrested Following Accident

 At 2:50 a.m. a motor vehicle struck a tree at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Van Winkle Avenue which resulted in the driver, a 33-year-old Midland Park man, being arrested for D.W.I. and issued a summons for Careless Driving.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he could be released to a sober friend.

Tools Stolen from Construction Site

 At 7: 10 a.m. , a contractor working on a construction project at St.  Catharine’s Church reported that various hand-powered tools valued at $900 had been stolen from a locked storage area sometime over the week end.  Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact Det. Officer Avoids Head-on Collision, Driver Arrested for DWI.
 

At 12.05 a.m. , P.O. James Calaski stopped a vehicle that almost struck him head-on on Maple Avenue and arrested the driver, a 44-year-old Fair Lawn man, for DWI and Careless Driving.  The man was later released to a sober adult pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.  As required by law, the man’s vehicle was impounded and held for 12 at his expense.

Diversionary Theft at Jewelry Store

 The owner of Taylormade Jewelers on Rock Road reported that three suspicious individuals were in his store on June 20th looking at jewelry.  When they left he discovered that a ring valued at $790 was missing.

Juvenile Assaulted at C.V.S.

 At 8 p.m. a mother came to the Police HQ with her 14-year-old daughter reporting that the teen was assaulted by another juvenile while she was inside CVS on Rock Road .  It was reported that the other juvenile punched and bit her.  The actor was identified as a 14-year-old Wayne resident who left the area following the assault.  Her parents were contacted by P.O. Chris Mc Inerney.  

The parents have all been advised of their right to sign juvenile complaints on behalf of their children.  As of this time no such complaints have been filed.

At 6:30 p.m. , P.O. Eric Reamy made a motor vehicle stop and discovered that the driver was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of River Vale.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until $ 1,000 bail was posted.

Hudson City Savings Victim of Flim flam

At 10:30 a.m. , officials from Hudson City Savings Bank on Prospect Street reported that one of their tellers was tricked out of $ 200 through deception.  The actor, described as a white Indian male with bleached hair wearing a flowered shirt and olive colored shorts, approached a teller stating he had $600 in cash and wanted it in $50 bills.  The teller counted the money and found $20 missing.  The man then recounted the money and handed it back to the teller after removing $180.  He then took the $600 in $50 bills from the teller and fled in a blue Ford Explorer.  Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact D/Sgt. Ridgewood 18-year-olds Arrested outside Bottle King

 P.O. Chris Mc Inerney observed three young men placing a case of beer in the trunk of a car parked in front of Bottle King on Prospect Street .  The driver, an 18-year-old Ridgewood man, was charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol and Misrepresentation of Age under ABC Laws after producing a phony Massachusetts drivers’ license.  His two friends, also 18-year-old Ridgewood residents, were charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol.  They were all released on their own recognizance pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.

At 11:45 p.m. , a Glen Rock man visiting a friend on Boulevard reported the occupants of three vehicles driving by the house threw rocks and eggs at his 1997 Acura which was parked on the street.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 12 noon , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 30-year-old Hawthorne man, was wanted for numerous outstanding warrants.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until $ 1,500 bail was posted.

Officers Break up Dispute on Hazelhurst

Officers responded to a dispute on Hazelhurst Avenue involving a Glen Rock resident and a Ho-Ho-Kus resident.  The argument over the past sale of a car resulted in one man causing damage to vehicles in the resident’s driveway and damage to the law of an adjacent residence.  Officers broke up the dispute and advised all involved of their right to sign complaints with the Glen Rock Municipal court.

Wallet Reported Missing from Boulevard Residence

A resident of Boulevard claimed that someone had entered his house during the night and stole his wallet.  The wallet was reported to contain $300 in cash as well as credit cards and identification.  There was no sign of forced entry and nothing else was disturbed in the house.

LCD Monitor Stolen from
Harristown Road Business

A business at the 266 Harristown Road office complex reported that an LCD flat screen monitor was stolen from a conference room.  The theft is reported to have occurred overnight; evidence indicated that the actor(s) forced entry through a rear door to a common hallway.  There were however no signs of forced entry to the exterior of the building.  The stolen monitored is valued at approximately $ 1,600.

Hit and Run Accident Results in DUI Arrest

A hit and run accident involving two cars occurred at the corner of Maple and Ackermann Avenues.  Witnesses’ descriptions of the car that fled the scene led officers to pull over the car on Maple Avenue .  The 47-year-old Montvale man was found to be, and arrested for, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.  He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.  He was later released on his own recognizance.

House Fire on
Delmar Ave

Officers responded to the scene of a house fire on Delmar Avenue .  Investigation revealed that the fire started in a defective bathroom vent fan.  Damages were confined to the bathroom ceiling, insulation and attic, no injuries were reported.  The fire was extinguished Glen Rock Fire Department.

Vandalism Found at CVS

P.O. Matthew Stanislao observed obscenities and graffiti painted on the walls and windows of CVS on Rock Road .  Detectives have also learned that NJ Transit Police are investigating similar vandalism found at their Rock Road facilities.  Anyone with information is asked to e-mail crimetips@glenrockpolice.com.

Special Olympics Torch Run Comes to Glen Rock

On Friday morning the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through Glen Rock.  Local Special Olympics athlete, John "J.J." Mulholland, a student at the Glen Rock High School , carried the torch through the borough accompanied by members of the Glen Rock Police Department.  The student body and staff of the Glen Rock High School cheered on "J.J." and the Glen Rock Officers as the run made its way past the front of the School.

The Law Enforcement Torch run is an international series of relays by Law Enforcement Officers to raise money for the Special Olympics.  For the past 22 years, the Special Olympics torch has been carried throughout New Jersey , signifying the achievements and personal courage of Special Olympics athletes.

9-1-1 Report of Disorderly Group.

At 9 p.m. officers responded to a 9-1-1 report of a disturbance in the parking lot at 390 Maple Avenue .  Upon arrival officers found a dispute between a group of men from out-of –state who were soliciting magazines sales and the lone employee on duty at 390 Maple Avenue .  This disturbance was broke up by Sgt. Jon Miller, Det. Dean Ackermann, P.O. Adam Pyatak, P.O. James Calaski and P.O. Frank Riggio.  The men were ejected from the area, the employee declined to sign complaints.

Money Stolen from Chiropractor’s Office

P.O. James Calaski investigated a report from a chiropractor that the lock to her office in the Medical arts building on Maple Avenue was tampered with; someone had rifled through her desk and removed $120 in cash.  Nothing else was damaged or stolen.  The Detective Bureau is currently looking into the matter.

Juvenile with Drug Paraphernalia Arrested in
Wild Park

A concerned citizen reported that a group of juveniles gathering in Wilde Park were possibly involved in drug related activity.  P.O. James Calaski subsequently arrested a 15-year-old Glen Rock boy found to be in possession of a pipe with drug residue believed to be cocaine.  The juvenile was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was released to his father pending an appearance in Family Court in Hackensack .

Juvenile Charged with Assault

At 3 p.m. P.O. Anna Marie Mattina, assisted by D/Sgt. Fred Stahman and Det. Dean Ackermann, responded to the Glen Rock High School following a report that a 17-year-old Glen Rock High School student had been assaulted by another 17-year-old male.  Following an investigation and interview of witnesses, the father of the victim signed a complaint for assault on behalf of his son against the other individual.  The aggressor was later released to his parents pending an appearance in Family Court in Hackensack .

Intoxicated Man Found Wandering Street

At 3 a.m. P.O. Chris Mc Inerney found a 59-year-old Ridgewood man staggering in the roadway at the intersection of Ackerman Avenue and Broad Street .  The man had injuries to his face and was highly intoxicated.  The victim was transported to Bergen Regional Medical Center where he was admitted to his own well-being.  The cause of his physical injuries is believed to be from an assault which occurred in another jurisdiction.

Vehicle Occupants Arrested for Possession of Alcohol

At 10 p.m. P.O. Anna Marie Mattina made a motor vehicle stop on Maple Avenue and found two 18-year-old Glen Rock men in possession of Jack Daniels Whiskey.  The driver was also in possession of a phony driver’s license.  The two were charged with possession of alcohol and the driver was issued motor vehicle summonses.  Also assisting with the arrest were Sgt. Jon Miller and P.O. Arthur Faber.

Drug Dealer Arrested During MV Stop

At 2 a.m. P.O. Robert Wojtecki made a motor vehicle stop on Jennifer Place and arrested the driver, a 20-year-old Glen Rock man with Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (crack cocaine) with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Narcotic Paraphernalia and Underage Possession of Alcohol.  P.O. Wojtecki, who was assisted to P.O. Christopher Mc Inerney, also seized $ 363.00 in cash along with ten small bags of crack cocaine.  The matter has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutors Office for Grand Jury action.

Teens Arrested Following Resident’s Complaint

At 9 p.m. a concerned resident reported underage drinking in Wilde Park near Salem Court .  P.O. Anna Marie Mattina charged two 15-year-old Glen Rock Juveniles with Underage Possession of Alcohol.  Both boys were released to the custody of their parents pending an appearance in Family Court.  Sgt. Jonathan Miller and P.O. Frank Riggio assisted.

Unlocked Cars Entered

On the morning of May 20th three separate reports of burglaries to unlocked cars were received from residents on Ferndale Avenue , Windham Place and the 100 block of Rock Road .  All of these incidents occurred sometime overnight while they slept.  All had personal items removed from their cars.  |

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 2 a.m. P.O. Matthew Stanislao made a motor vehicle stop on Harristown Road for a broken taillight and found an open bottle of beer in the car.  The passenger, a 19-year-old Glen Rock man, was charged with possession of alcohol while underage. P.O. Stanislao determined that the driver, a 20-year-old Ridgewood man, had warrants for his arrest out of Seaside Heights for failure to appear in court on a disorderly conduct charge.  The man was arrested and brought to the Glen Rock Police lock-up where he was also charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams.  He was then turned over to the Seaside Heights Police Department who transported him to their lock-up.  Sgt. Daniel Dour also assisted with this arrest.

 At 1:30 a.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio determined that the driver, a 25-year-old Hawthorne man, was wanted by the Paramus Police Department for failure to appear in court.  The man, who was also issued motor vehicle summonses, was wanted by the Paramus Police Department for failure to appear in court.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until $ 1,000 bail was posted.

Lewdness Incident Occurs in C.B.D.

At 6:30 p.m. , police received a report of a lewdness incident, which occurred in Rock Ridge Pharmacy.  According to three teenaged girls, a white male in his mid-twenties with curly hair and glasses exposed himself to them inside the store and then a second time outside the store.  Detectives are attempting to identify the offender who had left the area before Police were notified.

 At 6:20 p.m. , a Pinelynn Road resident reported that someone entered her home between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and took a wallet and jewelry.  There was no sign of forced entry and it appears that someone may have entered the home while the resident was working in her garden.

Commerce Bank Helps GRPD Launch Bike Patrol 


Commerce Bank recently partnered with the Glen Rock P.B.A Local 110 to help support the newly-established Glen Rock Police Bike Patrol Program. Commerce's donation helped the police purchase the first bike patrol equipment to reinforce community-policing efforts.

Commerce Bank's donation enabled the Police Department to purchase a bike, and other necessary equipment, such as a helmet and special uniforms. The bike program enables police to efficiently and effectively patrol areas, such as the Borough’s many athletic fields and parks, that are inaccessible by a police cruiser, as well as to patrol more stealthily than they could in a vehicle.

"Commerce Bank is proud to participate in the launching of the Bike Patrol, which helps the Glen Rock Police Department to more efficiently serve the community," said John Mazzei, Commerce Bank Glen Rock store manager. "We commend the Police Department on their continued commitment to the Glen Rock community."

A Hazelhurst Avenue resident reported that sometime during the pervious night someone tampered with tires of their car and stolen the air pressure caps.  The resident was home when the theft allegedly occurred but did not witness anything.

Teen Alcohol Party Results in Arrest

 At 11:40 p.m. , Sgt. Jonathan Miller, P.O. Adam Pyatak, and P.O. Frank Riggio responded to an anonymous report of an underage drinking party on Dunham Place .  Upon arrival the offices found 17 juveniles and 11 adults ages 18 and 19 along with two kegs of beer.  The homeowners were out of town.  The 18-year-old resident was charged under to host law for allowing underage drinking and will appear in Glen Rock Municipal Court.  The 17-year-old resident was also charged and will appear with his parents in Family Court in Hackensack .  The 17 juveniles were later released to their parents.

Woman Reports Lost $ 14,000 Ring

At 2 p.m. a customer at a Glen Rock hair salon reported that her engagement ring valued at $14,000 was missing.  The woman reported that she removed her ring while getting a manicure and left the salon without it.  When she returned salon employees searched, but were unable to locate the ring.

At 12:30 p.m. a Pinelynn Road resident reported that an unknown person keyed the side of his 2004 Lexus SUV.  The resident alleges that the damage occurred overnight while the vehicle was parked in his driveway.

Fetus Recovered in Borough’s Sewer System

Just after 8 a.m. Glen Rock D.P.W. workers at the Harristown Road sewage pumping station reported they had found the body of an 18-20 week old fetus while they were performing daily maintenance in the sewage pit.  Sgt. Daniel Dour and Det. Dean Ackermann responded with detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Squad, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office B.C.I. and an Investigator from the Bergen County Medical Examiners Office.  Glen Rock P.O. Robert Wojtecki also assisted at the scene.

Children Report Suspicious Incident

A Rock Road resident reported that her two children, a girl age 6 and boy age 4, were playing in the front yard of their home when a man in a dark colored SUV pulled up and made a comment to the girl about her brother.  According to the report, the vehicle left traveling west towards Lincoln Avenue .  The vehicle had long since left the area before police were notified and no similar incidents have been reported.

Fire Damages Rock Road Building in CBD

At 9:52 p.m. , Officers responded along with the Glen Rock Fire Department to a fire alarm at 206 Rock Road which is home to Marco Polo’s Secret and John’s Boy Pizzeria as well as several apartments.  As emergency services were responding a 9-1-1 call was received from the pizzeria reporting a heavy smoke condition. 

The Glen Rock Fire Department, assisted by area Fire Departments responding to a mutual aid request, extinguished the fire which caused damaged to Marco Polo’s Secret as well as one of the apartments upstairs.  Water damage also occurred in the basement. 

According the Fire Chief Thomas Jennings the fire was probably caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette on the roof of the building.  Smoke from the fire traveled down an open air shaft to the basement causing the fire alarm to go off.  There were no injuries and both businesses were able to re-open within a day.  The residents of a heavily damaged apartment have been displaced until extensive repairs can be made.

Teens Arrested Following Investigation

As a result of an investigation into an incident that occurred on April 9th when a 17-year-old Glen Rock girl was transported to the hospital after consuming a large amount of alcohol, Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman and P.O. Matthew Stanislao arrested four Glen Rock female juveniles on April 14 and changed them the consumption of alcohol on public property.  On April 16th Det. Sgt. Stahman arrested a 17-year-old Glen Rock male and charged him with possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages on public property.  All of the juveniles were released to the custody of their parents and their cases were referred to the Family County in Hackensack.

Shoplifter Encounters Officer on Foot

At 10:30 a.m. , P.O. Michael Ciaramella was on foot checking parking in the commuter lot by the Main Line train station when he observed a man running, followed closely by a CVS employee.  P.O. Ciaramella radioed for assistance and after a foot chase, the 36-year-old Paterson man was apprehend by P.O. Chris Mc Inerney and P.O. Robert Wojtecki in Lower Doremus Park.  Twenty six items of deodorant and shampoo were found in the man’s possession.  After being charged with shoplifting, it was determined that the man was also wanted by the Prospect Park Police Department for failure to appear in court.  The man was turned over to Prospect Park Police who transported him to the Passaic County Jail.

Off Duty Detective Apprehends Shoplifter
 

Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman arrested a 43-year-old Cliffside Park man and charged him with shoplifting, possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia and credit card theft.  While off duty Det. Sgt. Stahman observed two individuals acting suspiciously on the Main Line railroad tracks and later determined that one of the two had stolen $300 in razor blades from the CVS store on Rock Road .  The man was also in possession of crack cocaine and a crack pipe.  The man was processed at the Glen Rock Police lock-up and released on bail.  The merchandise was photographed and then returned to CVS.

21-year-old Glen Rock Woman Sexually Assaulted

A 43-year-old Glen Rock man was arrested by Det. Dean Ackermann and charged with sexual assault and criminal sexual contact.  The investigation began when a 21-year-old Glen Rock woman called a friend and said that she had been assaulted.  The friend then called 9-1-1 .  Sgt. Thomas Mc Crea and Sgt. Jonathan Miller responded to the home on Grove Street where the man and the woman lived in what was found to be a rooming house-type situation.  The man was remanded to the Bergen County jail with no bail as his immigration status could not be confirmed. 

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes Squad assisted with this investigation as did a representative of the Bergen County Rape Crisis Center .  The Glen Rock Building Department was alerted to possible zoning violations.

Intoxicated Teen Transported to Hospital

At 11:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to an EMS call involving a highly intoxicated 17-year-old Glen Rock girl.  The Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps, as well as paramedics from Valley Hospital also responded to the call.  The victim was transported to Valley Hospital for treatment.  A follow-up investigation is pending.

At 11:30 a.m. a Highwood Avenue resident reported the he placed some items on his driveway next to his car, went into his house and when he returned a short time later, the items were gone.  According to a witness a blue van was seen in the area.

Officers Respond to Drunken Street Brawl.

At 11:58 p.m. officers responded to 9-1-1 reports of a disturbance in the street involving a large group of people in the area of Highland Road and Harristown Road .  The first arriving officers found people on the ground injured.  Assisted by Ridgewood Officers, Glen Rock Sgt. Jon Miller, P.O. James Calaski and P.O. Adam Pyatak arrested an 18-year-old Glen Rock man and an 18-year-old Bergenfield man for disorderly conduct and underage consumption of alcoholic beverages.  In addition, the Bergenfield man was charged with theft after stealing a pair of handcuffs while he was at the police station.  Officers are continuing their investigation and additional arrests may be pending.

Woman Arrested Following Drug Overdose

At 3:30 p.m. Lieutenant Garret Merselis responded to a Midwood Road residence where a 19-year-old Pompton Lakes woman was found unconscious.  She was transported to Valley Hospital where Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman latter charged her with possession crack cocaine, being under the influence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Business Complains of Harassment by Youths

At 6 p.m. P.O. Eric Reamy was dispatched to a report from a business in a shopping center on Lincoln Avenue that he and his customers were being harassed by a group of Hawthorne juveniles.  The group of juveniles were brought back to police headquarters and turned over to their parents.  The merchant was advised on his right to sign complaints if he so desired.

Man Arrested for D.W.I. and Drug Possession on Motorcycle with Child Passenger.

At 6 p.m. , P.O. Anna Marie Mattina arrested a 39-year-old Fair Lawn man for possession of marijuana, D.W.I., possession of drug paraphernalia, and DWI with a minor child as a passenger.  The man was driving a motorcycle with his six-year-old daughter on the back when he cut through the Exxon gas station on the corner of Rock Road and Maple Avenue to avoid the traffic light.  The child was released to her mother and the man was later released pending a court appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.

Handgun Recovered In Storm Drain

County workers, cleaning a storm drain along Prospect Street near Grove Street , discovered a handgun in the storm drain.  The weapon, which appeared to have been in the water for an extended period of time, was turned over the Bergen County Police.  Glen Rock Det. Dean Ackermann and a Detective from the Bergen County Police Department are currently investigating the incident.

At 1:30 a.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop on Ackerman Avenue , a 19-year-old Hawthorne man was arrested by P.O. Frank Riggio for possession of narcotics paraphernalia, DWI, numerous motor vehicle violations, and driving with an open container of alcohol.  The passenger in the car, a 19-year-old Glen Rock man, was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol.

Suspicious Woman Found In
Academy of Our Lady

At 8:34 a.m. , officials at the Academy of Our Lady School reported that a suspicious woman was walking through the halls of the school.  Sgt. Daniel Dour was able to locate the woman who had left the school and was walking near the corner of Rodney Street and Harristown Road .  The woman, a 54-year-old Paterson resident, was taken into custody when a computer check found that she was wanted in Paterson for failure to appear in court.  She was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until Paterson Police acted on the warrant.

Glen Rock Woman Victim of Credit Fraud

At 1:30 p.m. , a Glen Rock woman reported that her credit card company notified her that someone in Australia was using her credit card number and making large purchases.  The victim was still in possession of her credit card and is not certain as to how her credit information had been obtained.  The credit account was closed and it is the responsibility of the bank to follow up with law enforcement officials in Australia .

Woman Killed At
Rock Road Rail Road Crossing.

At 10:47 a.m. , Odette B. Smith, 76, of Wyckoff was killed instantly when an express train struck her vehicle.  Mrs. Smith, the sole occupant of the 1992 Chevrolet Lumina, made a left turn from Main Street onto Rock Road and drove across the NJ Transit Main Line railroad tracks into the path of the oncoming train.  

An investigation by Det. Dean Ackermann along with Detectives from the NJ Transit Police Department found that the gates were down and that the flashers and bells all appeared to be working properly.  The express train was traveling at 56 miles per hour which is within the guidelines. 

It is believed that Mrs. Smith did not observe the signals, drove around the gate and onto the tracks.  The engineer of the train was sounding the horn and placed the train into emergency braking but it was too late.  The passenger side of her vehicle was struck by the train, sending her vehicle careening off the tracks on its side and into a utility pole on the opposite side of the street.  The victim was ejected from the vehicle and died instantly. 

Police Officers Adam Pyatak and Anna Marie Mattina happened to be in the Main Line Station parking lot on foot when the accident occurred.  They were at her side in seconds but she had already passed away. 

The train, with approximately 300 passengers, stopped further up the line.  No one on the train was injured and NJ Transit sent another train to pick them up within an hour of the accident.   

The crossing was closed for about two and a half hours while the accident was investigated and repairs were made to the crossing protection. 

Issues concerning the alignment of the crossing gates and placement of signals are being followed up on by Glen Rock and NJ Transit Police with officials from the Federal Rail Road Administration, NJ Department of Transportation and NJ Transit’s rail division.

Credit Fraud Suspect Arrested at Local Restaurant.

At 9:30 p.m. a 28-year-old Verona man who is employed at Peking Garden on Lincoln Avenue , was arrested for credit card theft, forgery, theft by deception and identity theft based on warrants issued by the Montville Police Department.  The man was taken into custody without incident and held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until Police for Montville responded to transport him to the Morris County jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest
 

At 7 p.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Anna Marie Mattina ran a computer check on the driver, a 44-year-old Paramus man, who was determined to have a $500 outstanding warrant out of Paterson for Failure to Appear in Court.  The subject was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he made arrangements to post bail.

Driver Runs Stop Sign Resulting in Rollover MVA
 

At 9:30 a.m. , officers responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Maple Avenue and South Highwood Avenue .  An investigation by P.O. Adam Pyatak determined that a car traveling north on Maple Avenue, driven by a 55-year-old Fair Lawn Man, struck a vehicle traveling west on South Highwood Avenue causing it to roll over three times.  The car that was struck was driven by a 21-year-old Ridgewood woman, who was transporting the two children she babysat.  All had minor injuries and were transport to Hackensack University Medical Center .  The driver from Fair Lawn was issued a summons for driving with a suspended license and the Ridgewood woman was issued a summons for disregard of a stop sign.  The accident caused Maple Avenue to be closed for 35 minutes while officers worked with EMS and Fire personnel tending to the injured and clearing the scene.

Glen Rock Man Arrested Following Road Rage Incident.

An incident of road rage took place involving two drivers sitting in backed-up traffic at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Ackerman Avenue caused by the temporary closure of Maple Avenue .  The incident began when one of the drivers got out of his car, exchanged words with the other driver and began punching him.  P.O. James Calaski, who had been directing traffic at the intersection, approached and ordered the aggressor to back away from the victim.  When the aggressor did not comply the officer tackled and restrained to man as other officers responded to the scene.  The aggressor, a 54-year-old Glen Rock man was arrested for simple assault and resisting arrest.  He was released on his own recognizance pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.  The man who was assaulted, also a Glen Rock resident, sustained minor injuries, he refused medical aid.

During the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Frank Riggio ran a computer check on the driver, a 24-year-old Waldwick man, who was determined to have a $250 outstanding warrant out of Glen Rock for Failure to Appear in Court.  In addition, the man was charged with Possession of Marijuana under 50 Grams and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  The subject was processed and held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he made arrangements to post bail.

Woman Arrested For Using False Identity.
 

At 6 p.m. during the course of a motor vehicle stop at the corner of Ferndale Avenue and Maple Avenue P.O. Frank Riggio arrested a 57-year-old Hackettstown woman on a charge of Giving False Information to a Law Enforcement Officer and issued her a summons for Driving with a Suspended License.  The woman was in possession of another Hackettstown woman’s stolen driver’s license and when asked for her identification she presented the stolen license to P.O. Riggio.  The woman was processed and the Glen Rock Police lock-up and released pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.

Law Firm Receives Hate Mail
 

A Harristown Road law firm reported that they had received an envelope containing hate mail.  Detectives are investigating this matter in conjunction with the F.B.I. and US Postal Inspectors.  It appears that the intended recipient was a business which formally occupied the office suite that the law firm recently moved into.

Supermarket Reports Theft of $300. 
 

A Security Investigator for the parent company of Food Basics on Lincoln Avenue contacted Det. Dean Ackermann after discovering evidence of a theft.  The suspect, identified as a cashier, had stolen $300 in cash from a register which was under video surveillance.  Formal charges against the 18-year-old Paterson woman will be processed once signed by a company official.

At 5 p.m. , during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. Michael Ciaramella ran a computer check on the driver, a 30-year-old Belleville man, who was determined to be wanted in South Hackensack for Failure to Appear in Court.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until he made arrangements to post $525 cash bail.

Fight Between Adult Residents Broken up by Patrols.

At 2 p.m. officers responded to a reported fight between two neighbors on Marlboro Road .  The fistfight between two men, ages 47 and 48, began while they were shoveling snow.  One of the men alleged that the altercation began when the other referred to his girlfriend in a offensive manner.  Neither man sustained serious injuries.  Both were advised to their right to sign complaints with the Glen Rock Municipal Court.

Suspicious Incident Occurs at Alan Avenue Home.

At 12:30 a.m. a resident of Alan Avenue called 9-1-1 reporting that someone may have entered his home.  He had left his residence for an hour and claimed that persons unknown had entered though the unlocked front door.  The man further alleged that the intruder(s) went through some drawers and closets.  Nothing appeared to be missing, there were no witnesses and no physical evidence was recovered.

Driver Involved in MVA Intoxicated and Wanted Person.  

At 8: 10 p.m. officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Ackerman Avenue .  A car, which was legally parked in front of a residence, was struck by a car traveling northbound on Ackerman Avenue .  P.O. Robert Wojtecki arrested the driver, a 24-year-old Lodi man, for D.W.I. and issued him a motor vehicle summons for being an unlicensed driver.  The driver was also determined to be wanted by Sparta NJ Police on outstanding warrants.  After being processed at Glen Rock Police HQ, the man was turned over to Sparta Police.  There were no injuries as a result of the motor vehicle accident but both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Routine MV Stop Results in Arrest

At 1 a.m. during the course of a routine motor vehicle stop, P.O. James Calaski determined that the driver, a 37-year-old Allendale man, was wanted by the Ho Ho Kus Police Department for Failure to Appear in Court.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police Lock-up until a family member posted $ 400 cash bail.

Glen Rock Man Seriously Injured While Crossing Street

At 7:45 a.m.    a pedestrian crossing Ackerman Avenue near Prospect Street to get to the bus stop was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Ackerman Avenue .  The pedestrian, a 21-year-old Glen Rock man, sustained serious injuries to his legs, arm and face and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center .  An investigation by P.O. Anna Marie Mattina and P.O. Eric Reamy found that the driver, a 47-year-old Glen Rock woman, didn’t see the man because of the strong sun glare.  No summonses were issued.

Police Officer Appointed to the G.R.P.D.

Chief Steven D. Cherry has announced the appointment of Anna Marie Mattina.  At February 9th meeting of the Borough Council, Mayor John van Keuren publicly sworn in Mattina as Glen Rock’s newest probationary officer as Councilman Mike O’Hagan (Chairman of the Public Safety Committee) and Chief Cherry looked on. With her appointment, the number of sworn officers returns to twenty-one. Mattina was hired after undergoing a selection and interview process with the members of the Public Safety Committee. Anna Marie was hired to replace Officer Michael Taylor who, after twenty-nine years of service to the community and 31 years as a law enforcement officer, retired on January 1, 2005.

Mattina, who is 27 years old, has been a police officer with the Paterson, NJ Police Department for 3 ½ years.  Anna Marie began her involvement with law enforcement in Haledon , NJ as a special police officer before becoming a Paterson officer. She has taken several in-service training classes at the Paterson and Passaic County Police Academies that should prove to be a benefit to the GRPD, as well as the community.   Anna Marie is a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.

Because Mattina is already certified by the Police Training Commission, she will only be required to spend a minimal period of time becoming familiar with the operations of the GRPD and then will be working on her own.

Ridgewood Man Arrested During MV Stop.  

At 11:03 p.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, Sgt. Dan Dour determined that the driver, a 44-year-old Ridgewood man, was wanted on a $235.00 outstanding warrant.  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until his bail was posted.

Wanaque Man Arrested During MV Stop.
 

At 8:50 p.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Eric Reamy determined that the driver, a 19-year-old Wanaque man, was wanted on a $750.00 outstanding warrant out of Newark .  The man was held at the Glen Rock Police lock-up until his bailed was posted.

Hawthorne Man Arrested for D.W.I..  

At 8:40 p.m. , during the course of a motor vehicle stop, P.O. Robert Wojtecki determined that the driver, a 55-year-old Hawthorne man, was driving while intoxicated.  The driver was arrested and transported to the Glen Rock Police lock-up where he was processed.  He was later released to a sober friend who was willing the take responsibility for him under the terms of “John’s Law”.  

"John's Law" resulted from the death of U.S. Navy Ensign John Elliott of Egg Harbor Township who was killed by a drunken driver in Upper Pittsgrove Township in July 2000.    

 

The law requires law enforcement to impound vehicles of those arrested for driving while intoxicated. Persons summoned to any Police Station to pick up any individual who as been arrested for D.W.I. are served with a potential liability warning.  This warning states that they will be criminally prosecuted if they permit or facility the intoxicated individual to operate any motor vehicle while still intoxicated.

Strange Odor Reported at
Coleman School  

At 4 p.m. , a report was received concerning a strange odor in the hallway at Coleman School .  A janitor and two children became ill and were treated for respiratory distress at the scene by members of the Glen Rock Ambulance Corps.  The janitor and one child were later transported to The Valley Hospital for further treatment.  The Bergen County Hazmat Team responded to the scene along with the Glen Rock Fire Department.  It is suspected that some form of mace or pepper spray may have been the cause of the incident.

G.R.P.D. Receives Drug Dealers Car & Safe
 

Following the conviction of a drug dealer arrested by Glen Rock Detectives in April 2004, the Glen Rock Police Department received forfeiture of property used in commission of the crimes charged.  A vehicle and safe formerly used by the drug dealer has been turned over the G.R.P.D. by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office with the condition that such property be used for law enforcement purposes.

At 12:30 a.m. Sgt. Dan Dour stopped a motor vehicle and determined that the operator had a $1,500.00 outstanding warrant out of Paterson and his license was suspended.  The operator was issued four traffic summonses and turned over to Paterson Police Detectives on the outstanding warrants.

Opici Employee Accused of $ 4,000.00 Theft
 

The Security Department of Opici Wines on De Boer Drive signed a complaint against an ex-employee for theft by deception.  The complaint alleges that the 37-year-old Hawthorne woman stole over $ 4,000.00 through improper bookkeeping.  The defendant has been served with the complaint and a court appearance is pending.

Homeless Man Arrested for Attempted Burglary
 

Detective Sergeant Fred Stahman arrested a 50-year-old homeless man and charged him with one court of attempted burglary following the investigation of an incident that occurred on Wednesday, January 12th.  On that morning a resident from the 600 block of Prospect Street reported that someone tried to break into his house at about 3 a.m.  Detectives later determined that the individual attempted to enter a total of 21 houses in the area.      

Glen Rock Detectives, working in conjunction with Detectives from River Edge, New Milford, Washington Township, Paramus, Westwood, Emerson, South Hackensack and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office,  were able to identify an arrest the suspect as part of a joint investigation.  The man was taken to be Bergen County Jail where he is being held pending grand jury action.

Emotionally Disturbed Man Detained.
 

At 10 p.m. a Harristown Road resident reported that a strange man come to his front door and said that he was there to pick up airline tickets.  According to the resident the man then ran from the house and around the corner where he jumped into a red SUV.  Responding officers alerted neighboring jurisdictions which resulted in the man, a 24-year-old Maywood resident, being stopped by Hawthorne Police.  The man was detained for investigation and later transported to St. Joseph ’s Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Hawthorne Man Arrested for D.W.I.  

At 8:50 p.m. P.O. Frank Riggio arrested a 49-year-old Hawthorne man and charged him with speeding and D.W.I. after observing him driving erratically down Glen Avenue .  The man was later released to a sober individual willing to take responsibility for him.  An appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court is pending.

Fair Lawn Man Arrested For Sexual Assault of Glen Rock Boy.

Det. Dean Ackermann, along with Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes Squad, arrested Richard E. Favaro of Fair Lawn, NJ for Aggravated Sexual Assault.  The arrest took place during the early evening hours at the suspect’s apartment following a month long investigation.  The subject was arrested without incident. 

Mr. Favaro met the victim who was 12 years old on a telephone chat line, which is also associated with a website.   On the chat line, the subject made arrangements to go to the victim’s home.  At the Victim’s residence, the defendant molested the boy. 

The defendant was held on $150,000 bail no 10%.

Attempted Burglary on
Prospect Street .  

A resident from the 600 block of Prospect Street reported that someone tried to break into his house at approximately 3 a.m.    Officers responding to the scene were able to determine by the foot-prints in the snow that the would-be intruder went to about 12 different homes on Harristown Road and East Gramercy Place .  None of the homeowners reported anything missing.  

Glen Rock Detectives, working in conjunction with other Detectives in the region, have identified a potential suspect.  Additional details will be posted once an arrest is made.

Stolen Car Dumped on Glen Blvd.

At 10:30 a.m. an alert Glen Boulevard resident reported that a car sped off down the street with its headlights off.  The responding Officers determined that one of the occupants of the car had dumped a second car, a 1997 Toyota Corolla that had been stolen from Hackensack, on the street.   The car, which had its windshield and side window smashed, was returned to its owner the following day.

Lap Top Computer Stolen From Business Office.

At 6:30 p.m., officials from Opici Wine of De Boer Drive reported the theft of a laptop computer from a desk.  The computer was left unattended while numerous visitors were in the building and there are no known witnesses.

Suspicious Man Found Wandering Residential Area.

At 3:30 p.m., Officers were dispatched to a report of a man acting oddly while wandering along Cornwall Road.  In response to this report Officers stopped the man, a 35-year-old former resident of Frederick, MD.  It was determined that the man was not wanted or a missing person and that he was currently homeless.  At the man’s request he was transported to a homeless shelter in Paterson.

Burglary Reported on Romary Court

A Romary Court resident reported that while they were away, someone forcibly entered their home through a rear door sometime between December 29th and January 1st at 7:30 p.m.    The home was searched and ransacked. One item of jewelry, a ring, was reported missing.
