Police Officer Appointed to the Department

Chief Steven D. Cherry announced the appointment today of Frank Riggio.  In an abbreviated ceremony at the Borough Hall, Council President & Mayor-elect John VanKeuren along with Mayor Hahn, sworn in Riggio as Glen Rock’s newest probationary officer as Chief Cherry, Captain Kealy and several officers looked on. Frank was hired to replace Officer William Van Dyk Jr who, after twenty-five years of service to the community, is retiring. Riggio was hired after undergoing an interview process with the members of the Public Safety Committee, the Mayor and the Chief-of-Police and was the next qualified officer on the list.

Riggio, who is 26 years old and recently married, has been a police officer with the Hawthorne, NJ Police Department since 2000.  Frank began his involvement with public safety and law enforcement in Glen Rock as an auxiliary police officer and also worked as a dispatcher for Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch before becoming a Hawthorne officer. He also serves as a volunteer Firefighter in Hawthorne. He has taken several in-service training classes at the Passaic County Police Academy that should prove to be a benefit to the GRPD, as well as the community.   Frank is a graduate of William Paterson University with his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.

Because Riggio is already certified by the Police Training Commission, he will only be required to spend a minimal period of time becoming familiar with the operations of the GRPD and then will be working on his own.

Glen Rock PD Bids Farewell to Two Veteran Officers who Retire at the end of December

On January 1, 2004 Lt. Ralph Molinaro and P.O. William P. Van Dyk Jr. will become the most recent retirees from the Glen Rock Police Department, joining P.O. John D. Mastick who retired on August 1st, 2003.

Lt. Molinaro was appointed to the Glen Rock Police Department in September of 1974 and began service with the Uniformed Patrol Division following his graduation from the Bergen County Police Academy.  He was promoted to Sergeant in July of 1984 and to Lieutenant in April of 1999.

Lt. Molinaro supervised the Uniformed Patrol Division and served as a firearms instructor and the department’s bias crimes investigator.  He is a silver life member of the New Jersey State PBA and served terms as both President and Secretary of Glen Rock PBA – Local # 110.

During his tenure Lt. Molinaro received several valor awards honoring his exemplary performance in the field. Most recently he received an apprehension award recognizing his role while assisting other officers taking into custody a barricaded male, high on crack cocaine, who seriously injured another officer.

P.O. William P. Van Dyk Jr. was appointed to the Glen Rock Police Department in January of 1979 and began service with the Uniformed Patrol Division following his graduation from the Bergen County Police Academy.  He was one of the founding members of the Glen Rock D.A.R.E. program and spent almost a decade teaching elementary school children about the dangers of drug abuse and violence.

Huisking Foundation Donates Equipment to the GRPD
Through the efforts of the locally based Huisking Foundation and the Glen Rock Policemen’s Benevolent Association, long overdue upgrades were recently completed on the borough’s police vehicles.  The cost to local taxpayers was zero.

The Huisking foundation was originally founded in 1945 in memory of Frank R. Huisking who gave his life as a fighter pilot in Italy during World War II.  Over the years, it has been renamed the Huisking Foundation in memory of additional Huisking Family members for their efforts to promote in the minds of young men and woman a sense of duty and an ardent love for the United States of America.  The main activity of the foundation is to disburse funds to duly accredited organizations whose mission is consistent with the Foundation’s goal.

Early last year Glen Rock resident William “Skip” Huisking and the board of directors of The Huisking Foundation set aside several thousand dollars for what they felt was a worthwhile cause, providing funding that would aid local Police Officers during their day to day duties. The money was donated to the Glen Rock PBA whose members decided what equipment they needed the most and bought it. Once purchased, the equipment was donated to the Police Department.

Using the generous donation by the Huisking Foundation and pooling it with a donation in memory of long time Glen Rock resident Louis Spata, the PBA has outfitted Glen Rock’s Police Cars with new state of the art emergency lights, hand held patrol lights and portable search and rescue lights for the Department’s four wheel drive emergency truck.

P.O. Eric Reamy showing off new emergency lights & flashlights

According to Det. Dean Ackermann, PBA President, “Police Officers spend considerable amount of time working in the dark and proper lighting equipment is essential.  Glen Rock Police have been using the same emergency lighting equipment since the late 1980’s and certainly got their money’s worth out of it.  However, twelve to fifteen year old lighting equipment became a problem as we entered the new millennium.  A very tight police budget just did not have enough room to fully fund these upgrades”.  While police have used criminal forfeitures and even traded an old Police Car to augment funding of equipment such as in-car video systems and computers, there was no funding for basic equipment.  “In today’s environment police agencies that do not keep up with technological advances risk going the way of the dinosaur, however, funding issues create a big challenge for municipal budgets which are not accustomed to paying these costs.”

With money provided by private funding and physical labor on the part of P.O. Eric Reamy, PBA Vice President, the upgrades will benefit officers on a daily basis.  “PBA members are grateful for this type of support”, Det. Ackermann noted.  “Groups such as the Huisking Foundation, the Spata Family and the Glen Rock Chamber of Commerce, which routinely raise money to buy bullet proof vests for Glen Rock Police Officers, have really made the difference for us.  Recent events have served to remind all of us that being prepared and properly equipped is not a luxury”

Important Reminder for Residents with Auto-Dialing Alarm Systems

In December of 2001 the telephone company enacted a change in our dialing procedures by requiring that all 10 digits be used, even for local calls.  This may effect those homes who use an auto-dialer system for their burglar and/or fire alarm systems.  (An auto-dialer simply dials a pre-programmed number and then activates a pre-recorded message telling the monitoring station operator the nature of the alarm. If you do not have an auto-dialer this does not effect you.)  For those residents who use auto-dialers, we are asking that you contact your alarm company and make sure that they are programmed correctly using the appropriate area code.  If your auto-dialer is not properly programmed you may not have any burglar or fire protection.

As a reminder, all burglar and fire alarms must be routed to a central station monitoring office and are NOT allowed to dial the police department number.

If you have any questions about your auto-dialer and if it is calling the correct number, please contact your alarm company.  Unfortunately, the police department does not have the equipment or personnel to assist you in testing or re-programming your system.
