Trespasser on the N.J. Transit Railroad
Tracks Arrested after Struggle with Officers
At 5:34 PM Officers Eric Reamy and Dan Dour were dispatched to
the New Jersey Transit railroad property located adjacent to
500 Broad Street (at the rear of the Lock-Up Storage Company) on a
report from passing trains that there was a male standing on the
tracks. Officer Reamy located the white male who appeared
intoxicated. He refused to comply to the officer's
instructions to move off the tracks and was dangerously close when
a train passed through moments after the officer located him.
Unsure of the individual state-of- mind and fearing for his
safety, the officer approached him and attempted to escort him off
the tracks. However, the individual became violent and attacked
the officer with a large beer bottle that was in his hand.
The officer called for back-up and within minutes Officers Dour,
Mastick, Lt. Molinaro, Det. Ackermann, and Sgt. Merselis
responded, along with officers from the Ridgewood Police
Department. The subject was fighting and struggling
violently with officers to get away. The officers attempted to gain control over the subject and restrain him, as
they wrestled him to the ground where they finally were able to safely control
him. Even handcuffed, he continued to resist and ignore the
officers. He was transported to the station and secured
in the jail cell, but continued to act in an irrational
manner. He would not even provide officers with his name,
date-of-birth or address and he had no identification on him.
Believing that the subject may have consumed something in addition
to alcohol and that he might even be suicidal, officers called
Glen Rock EMS to examine and treat the subject. He was
transported via ambulance to Bergen Regional Medical Center in
Paramus, NJ with
Officer John Mastick and Dan Dour, for medical care.
During the struggle Officer Reamy sustained minor injures that
did not require immediate medical care.
The subject was charged, as a John Doe (used for a person with no positive
identification) and transferred to the Bergen County Jail in
Hackensack, NJ by Officer Adam Pyatak and a Bergen County Police
Officer at 2:00 AM. He will make a first appearance before Municipal Court Judge Thornwall

Motor Vehicle Crash on State Highway 208
lead to Arrest for Driving While Intoxicated
At 1:48 AM Sgt. Thomas McCrea and Officer Adam Pyatak were
dispatched to a report of a car crash just off of 208 North at the
Harristown Road off-ramp. When the officers arrived they
found the lone vehicle on the front lawn of a house in the
200 block of Harristown Road with no driver around. The
resident told the officers that he actually saw the vehicle as it
veered from the highway, strike the small cement divider at the
off-ramp, become air-borne and then land on his front lawn, just
feet from a utility pole. The driver then exited the vehicle
and began walking up Harristown Road until the resident pointed
him out to officers.
After officers spoke with the driver, it was determined that he
had consumed alcoholic beverages and should not have been
driving. The operator was asked to undergo several field sobriety tests,
but was unable to successfully complete them. The 23 year-old
male driver from Haskell, NJ was arrested for Driving
while Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs and
transported to Glen Rock Headquarters for processing. After
taking the Breathalyzer test, it was determined that his blood
alcohol level was above the legal limit in New Jersey and he was
issued a summons for D.W.I. He was released pending an

Officer Injured in Struggle to Arrest
Unwanted Guest under the Influence of Drugs & Alcohol
At 6:52 PM Officers Mike Taylor and Eric Reamy were dispatched
to a Henry Street address on a reported "Unwanted Guest"
who refused to leave the home. When officers arrived they
spoke with the girlfriend of the subject who stated that her
boyfriend was intoxicated and acting irrational. When she asked
him to leave, he refused. Officers located the 36 year-old Ridgewood resident,
in a front porch
apartment of the house, where he had locked himself in. The officers attempted to reason with the
subject for some time, as they watched him pacing around the room,
mumbling incoherently to himself.
When they were finally able to enter the room, the subject
immediately became defensive, with his hands up,
in an almost fighting position. While telling the subject that he
was no longer welcome to stay at his girlfriend's home, he
repeatedly was making an effort to keep officers
away from the couch in the room. Officer Reamy went over to
the couch and upon looking inside the open bag, he discovered that
it contained a set of narcotics paraphernalia (including
several spoons, a screen with a white powdery residue and numerous
empty, plastic bags with white residue) Along with patrol
Lieutenant Ralph Molinaro, who also had responded, the officers
told the subject that he was under arrest and as they attempted to
handcuff him, the subject became unruly & resisted the
officers attempts.
With only one handcuff on, the subject was fighting and struggle
violently to get away. All three officers attempted to gain control over the subject and restrain him, as
they fell about the room and into the furniture. The subject was fighting so wildly
that officers were not immediately able to get to their radios to call for help.
Once they were able to radio a "10-13" or officer needs
assistance, police units from Ridgewood and other surrounding
jurisdictions responded. The three Glen Rock officers continued to
wrestle with the
subject until the additional officers from Ridgewood arrived and,
with their help, they were able to safely gain control of the
subject. He was transported to the station and secured
in the jail cell, but continued to scream and act in an irrational
manner.
During the struggle at the home, Officer Taylor sustained a shoulder injury
and was unable to move his right arm. He was transported
from the scene to Valley Hospital ER by a Ridgewood officer.
Believing that the subject may have overdosed, officers called
Glen Rock EMS and Valley Hospital Paramedics to examine and treat the subject. He was
transported via ambulance to Bergen Regional Medical Center with
Officer John Mastick, as well as a Ridgewood Officer.
The subject was charged with one count of aggravated assault on a Police Officer, and one count
of resisting arrest. In addition he was charged with one count of
being under the influence of Drugs and one count of possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
The bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Thornwall at $25,000.00.

Apartment Search Leads to Arrest for Narcotics
and Receiving Stolen Property
At 10:08 AM Officer Chris McInerney along with patrol
supervisor Paul Weber, Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman and Det. Dean
Ackermann responded to a Rock Road apartment to conduct a search
of the premises for proceeds of a burglary.
Upon entering location with the lease holder of the apartment, and the mother of the resident, the officers
heard voices from one of the bedrooms. Officers along
with the lease holder went to the room and they found the tenant,
and her boyfriend, sitting on the bed. When the boyfriend noticed
the officers he quickly place his hand on the bed as if in an
effort to conceal something. When the boyfriend, a 39 year-old Garfield resident was asked to stand up, the officers observed small white
"rocks" on the bed that they believed to be crack cocaine.
Officer McInerney placed the boyfriend under arrest. As the
officers continued their investigation, they discovered 2 metal pipes
with what appeared to be crack residue inside it. They also
found razor blades and a metal screen.
Both parties were charged with possession of Crack Cocaine and possession of
narcotics paraphernalia. In addition, the 35 year old
female was charged with receiving stolen property in connection
with a previous home burglary that occurred in Glen Rock on
November 25th.
After making an appearance before Municipal Court Judge
Thornwall, bail was set for both parties at $3,000.00.

Officer Locates Vehicle that was Taken
Without the Owners Permission - Leads to Narcotics Arrest
At 11:53 AM Officer Mike Ciaramella, while assigned to the
walking post in the Central Business District, observed a White
Honda parked in front 246 Rock Road. The officer was aware
that the car had been reported taken by the owner's daughter,
without her permission. Officer Ciaramella walked up
to the vehicle and began interviewing the lone occupant who was in the passenger seat.
The officer asked him for some identification and the male told
the officer that he was a juvenile and that he did not have any
identification. In an attempt to obtain the juveniles
identification and what he was doing in the car, the officer asked
him to exit the vehicle. The juvenile complied, but was continually grasping at his left front pants pocket and whatever its contents were.
Concerned for his safety, the officer asked him what was in his pockets and
he pulled out a large amount of cash stating the vehicle's owner had just given him $1,000.00 for recovering the vehicle in Passaic.
Noticing that there still appeared to be something in that pocket,
the officer patted down the outside of that same pants and felt
several items still in his pocket. The juvenile then removed a lighter and a clear,
Ziploc bag containing a brownish green vegetation that officer believed to be marijuana.
The juvenile was placed under arrest, handcuffed and subsequent search revealed a silver metallic pen with a removable top which revealed a 2.5" sharpened
knife blade.
The juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana, as well
as possession of a weapon (the knife). After being
processed, he was released to his Aunt. He will have to
appear in Family Court in Hackensack to answer the charges.
During the above field contact, the vehicle's operator and her
boyfriend exited an apartment and approached the officer. Both
parties were suspects in an unrelated investigation and detectives
had been actively looking for them. They were voluntarily transported to headquarters for further investigation
by Det. Sgt. Stahman, that led to a Burglary and Theft arrest.

Road when he observed a small, white vehicle commit a traffic
violation. After following the car for a short distance, he
stopped the car at Cornwall and Hillman.
While speaking with the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana
coming from inside the car. While interviewing the driver about
the odor, he became visibly nervous, pacing around the area and repeatedly asking how long this was going to take, etc.
The driver agreed to let the officer search the interior of the
car and under the back seat he located a plastic bag containing 6 (six) "nickel" bags of what
is believed to be marijuana. Additionally he located a black devise that looked like a pager, but was actually a container for holding marijuana and a small metal pipe used to smoke marijuana in the shape of a battery.
After interviewing all the juvenile occupants, the one who was
sitting where the marijuana was found, admitted to owning it. He
was placed under arrest, handcuffed, and transported to the
station for processing. After being served with a Juvenile
Complaint, he was released to father. He will have to appear
in Family Court in Hackensack to answer the charges.

reported observing a act of lewdness outside of her home. The
victim stated that sometime between 1000 AM and 1100 AM, she noticed a dark red or maroon colored vehicle parked
in the area of Iona Place, facing Rock Road. The victim noticed that the vehicle was occupied with a
lone white male. When she went to bring her dog inside she noticed that the car was still there and
still was occupied. The victim then went inside, and looking out of her window, noticed that the occupant had his pants open, his
genitalia exposed and that he was masturbating. She obtained the license plate and went to confront the actor. When he observed her approaching his car, he immediately drove off in an unknown direction.

Glen Rock Officer's Save Resident's
Life with help from Defibrillator
At 2:31 PM Officers George Erlich, Eric Reamy and
James Calaski were dispatched to the Glen Rock Middle School
located on Harristown Road, for a report of man who had collapsed
outside the building. Officer Reamy was first to arrive on
the scene followed shortly thereafter by Officer Calaski who
observed that two by-standers were performing CPR. The
officers immediately evaluated the victim and determined that he
was still not breathing and he had no detectable pulse.
While one officer inserted a special airway into the victims mouth
and began rescue breathing, the other set-up the automated external
defibrillator (AED) by placing pads (electrodes) onto the victim’s chest.
The machine then analyzed the electrical activity of victim's
heart and determined that he
had a "shockable" heart rhythm. It then prompted
officers to deliver
the electrical shock needed to change his heart rhythm from one of
chaotic beating, to that of a normal function. After one shock was
administered by the AED, the unit again analyzed the victim, and
this time determined that no shock was need, as the victim's heart
was now beating in a normal fashion. The victim, a 48
year-old Glen Rock resident, then began breathing on his
own. Within several minutes of having his heart shocked back
into a normal rhythm, he began to regain consciousness and was
talking with the officers. This type of recover from a
massive cardiac arrest is almost unheard of and the officers could
not believe the miracle they had witnessed.
The Glen Rock Ambulance Corps, along with the
paramedics from the Valley Hospital, responded and took over care
of the victim. While paramedics administered medications to
help stabilize the victim before he could be transported to the
hospital, his heart, again began to slip into an erratic pattern
and he needed to be "shocked" by the paramedics, but
again, he remained conscious and talking with
rescuers.
The officer's actions, training and use of the automated external
defibrillator clearly rescued this resident from almost certain
death.

stolen out of Newark, NJ. The officer followed the vehicles south on Maple Avenue,
to the intersection of Wagaraw and River Roads in Fair Lawn where
he requested back-up from the Fair Lawn Police Department. The
officer activated his emergency lights, and the van began to pull

With lights and siren on, the van refused to yield. The officer
continued to pursue the van into the City of Paterson until the driver
decided to stop on the N.Y.S.&W. railroad tracks. Then,
without warning, the driver bailed out of the van and fled on foot.
Officer Reamy advised dispatchers that he was now on a foot
pursuit of a black male, 5'9", thin build, wearing all black, onto the tracks and then
onto 12th Avenue, where the suspect ran down a driveway and jumped over a fence.

begin his search and there he located a white male, fitting the
description of the wanted person. As Sgt. McCrea responded
to backup Officer Reamy he spoke with the subject, a 21 year old
Port Jervis resident. The subject told the officers that he was in the Stop and Shop store, and he fled through a back door when he saw the police arresting his friend.
The subject was patted down and when asked to provide
identification he opened his wallet to get his driver's
license and officers noticed a small wax paper envelope in the wallet.
When officers asked what it was, he stated it was heroin. As the
interview continued the subject produced an additional wax paper
envelope that also was believed to contain heroin. The
subject was transported to Ridgewood Police Headquarter were a
criminal complaint was signed and bail set at $500.00. As
the subject was unable to post the bail, he was taken to the

Chadwick Place
Resident arrested on $10,000 Warrant
At 8:45 PM Officer Eric Reamy responded to a
Chadwick Place home to serve a warrant out of the Borough of Fair
Lawn on a failure to answer charges for Driving While
Intoxicated. As the officer spoke with the homeowner he recognized
him as a longtime resident of that address. He asked the homeowner
if he knew the person named on the warrant and the homeowner stated he did not know
him or why anyone would use his address. The officer then advised
the homeowner that there is an active warrant for the person named
and asked him if that person showed up, to please advise this
agency.
Being suspicious of the statements of the homeowner, Officer Reamy
did some investigation and found that the description of the
homeowner was similar to that of the person named in the
warrant. The officer then obtained a 1990 photograph of the
homeowner from a previous arrest and contacted the arresting
officer from the Fair Lawn Police. The officer was able
to positively identify the homeowner as the person named in
the warrant.
At 9:46 PM Sgt. McCrea, as well as Officers Reamy and Mastick responded back to Chadwick
Place and again contacted the homeowner. He was advised of
the positive ID from the arresting Fair Lawn officer, but
continued to deny being the person named on the warrant. The
resident did agree to be transported to Fair Lawn Police
headquarters for further investigation.

World Trade
Center Tragedy Touches Glen Rock
When news of the World Trade Center tragedy was
broadcast, Chief Cherry and Captain Kealy ordered an immediate
recall of all available off-duty officers to report to
headquarters. The police administration's concern was that
many of Glen Rock's residents commute to New York City and may
have children in the public and private schools. The
administration wanted officers on hand to assist school officials
with the possibility of distraught parents or children. Two
officers were assigned to the high school and middle school, while
one officer was assigned to each elementary school.
With two major railroad lines running through the
Borough, officials wanted to have officers, as well as emergency
medical personal positioned at each train station, in case an
individual needed care when they exited a train. Glen Rock
EMS and FD worked together, with officers, to provide any
assistance that they could.
In addition, all Bergen County police agencies
provide a certain number of officers to a specialized response
unit known as the Rapid Deployment Force (R.D.F.). These
officers undergo rigorous and highly specialized training.
Sgt. Thomas McCrea and Officer Daniel Dour are assigned to this
unit from Glen Rock. Upon receiving their orders, Sgt.
McCrea and Officer Dour were assigned with other members of the
R.D.F. to close and secure the George Washington Bridge and
remained on their post for fourteen hours.
Unfortunately, Glen Rock detectives have also been
busy throughout this time, helping families compile the necessary
forms and paperwork to report their loved ones missing. To
date, detectives have taken eight missing persons reports and are
aware of four additional cases.
Our thoughts and prayers go our to the families
and friends of the injured or lost.

Suspect
Arrested in Lewdness Incident on Rodney Street
At 2:19 PM Lieutenant Ralph Molinaro was dispatched
to Maple Ave. and Harding Plaza to meet a Glen Rock resident who
flagged down an officer to report that an individual
had just exposed himself to her as she was riding her bicycle on
Rodney Street. The victim stated that approx. 10 minutes
prior to flagging down the officer, she was riding her bicycle on Rodney Street, between Maple Avenue and Main Street, traveling towards Main Street. A vehicle
approached her on the left and was traveling slowly. As she gazed over to make sure the vehicle
was not too close to her, she made eye contact with the driver.
The victim then observed that the driver was masturbating while driving
the car. The victim described the vehicle as a smaller model sedan, light colored, bearing
a NJ license plate. The actor was described as a light skinned, Afro-American or Hispanic male in his 20's, dark wavy hair and brown eyes.
A radio broadcast was made to all the surrounding towns, and with
several minutes Midland Park Police reported that they had stopped the suspect vehicle on Goffle Road near Godwin Avenue.
Lt. Molinaro transported the victim to the traffic stop in Midland Park. Upon approaching the scene, the victim positively identified the vehicle, which was a tan Integra
and the license plate matched. The driver was standing on the sidewalk and the victim was driven past him.
She positively identified the driver as the male who was masturbating while driving past her on Rodney Street.
The suspect, a Paterson resident, denied the allegations
or being involved. However, based on the victim's statement,
the suspect was arrested and processed. He was charged with
one count of lewdness and released pending an appearance in Glen
Rock Municipal Court.

Arrested in Theft of Cash from Bottle King Liquors.
At 9:40 AM Lieutenant Ralph Molinaro was dispatched
to the Bottle King Liquor store on a reported theft of over
$450.00, in cash, from the office area. The cash was located
in a cash drawer that is in a locked/secured area of the store. A
list of employees who had access to the drawer was forwarded for
follow-up investigation.
Det. Stahman responded to the scene and through
investigation it was determined that a 24 year old Glen Rock
resident who was working at the store the evening of the theft was
a prime suspect.
On 9/8/01, the suspect was interviewed, at the store, concerning the theft. At first,
he denied any association with the theft of the cash. He then acknowledged that he stole the money and used it to pay off credit cards.
He was then placed under arrest and transported to Police Headquarters.

Stopping for a Red Traffic Signal
At 3:05 AM Officer Daniel Dour was on patrol when
he observed a car that failed to stop for a red traffic signal as
it was traveling North on Maple Ave. at Harristown
Road. Officer Dour observed the vehicle weaving, as it
continued going North and stopped
it near the Ridgewood boarder. While interviewing the driver, he detected
a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
The operator was asked to undergo several field sobriety tests,
but was unable to successfully complete them. The 31 year-old

A & P
Liquor Store Burglarized by Entering Through the Roof.
At 11:01 AM Officer Adam Pyatak, along with
detectives, were dispatched to the A & P Wine and Sprits Store
on Lincoln Avenue (at the Hawthorne boarder) on a reported
burglary that had occurred over the weekend. Officers were
informed by a roofing contractor that he had been called to the
location to repair a roof vent fan that was leaking and no longer
operating. When the contractor went onto the roof, he
discovered that the reason the fan was not working was because the
blades had been bent in such a manner that would allow access into
the store.
As officers investigated, they discovered that
some unknown person(s) had climbed between the fan blades and
dropped down, into the rear of the store. (It appeared that the
store was entered twice as officers investigated a burglar alarm
on August 18, 2001 at 12:01 AM. At that time they discovered the
rear door unsecured, but they found all to be in order inside and
even had the store manager respond, who confirmed that nothing
appeared disturbed or missing. The second incident occurred on
August 19, 2001 at 11:49 PM when officer Dan Dour discovered the
rear door standing open. After the interior was checked with
officers from Glen Rock and Hawthorne Police, again it was
confirmed, through the store manager, that all appeared in order.)
When the actor had decided to leave the store he exited through
the rear doors. It is not known if anything was taken and
there are no suspects.

Car Stolen
after Burglary & Theft Reported to Lincoln Ave. Residence
At 5:07 PM Officer Eric Reamy was dispatched to
the 300 block of Lincoln Ave on a reported Burglary and Theft to a
home, where a car was missing. Through investigation it was
determined that the homeowner had returned home from work and found his garage door standing open, and his wife's 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora missing from the garage.
As he went inside through the interior garage door he discovered that his house had been entered and several rooms had been ransacked.
He had left for work at approximately 7:00 AM.
The actor had gained entry to the home through an open ground level rear window by forcing the screen up and climbing in.
It appeared that most of the rooms in the house were entered by the actor, with the majority of stolen items taken from a jewelry chest in the master bedroom, and cash from a dresser drawer.
While being interviewed, the homeowner called to
the officers' attention that the stolen vehicle was equipped with
OnStar, which may be able to track the vehicle. OnStar was
contacted and at approx 6:30 PM OnStar operators advised
detectives that the vehicle was within the confines of the Town of Newburgh, New York.
Police Dispatch contacted the Town of Newburgh Police who were able to locate the vehicle,
and after a motor vehicle chase, arrest the actor and recover property believed to be stolen from the victim's home.
The 27 year old actor from Edgewater, NJ was
charged with Burglary and Theft for the crimes in Glen Rock, as
well as numerous motor vehicle and criminal charges from the New
York authorities. Bail was set at $25,000.

Reckless Driver
Arrested after Short Chase on Highway
At 9:51 PM Detective Sgt. Fred Stahman received a
radio broadcast of a vehicle being operated in a reckless manner
on State Highway 208 South. Det. Stahman was in the area of
the highway and positioned himself to observe southbound traffic.
After several minutes he observed the vehicle and began to follow
it. The vehicle would swerve abruptly from the left lane to
the shoulder and then back to the left lane. Det. Stahman
activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the car,
however it failed to due so, continuing southbound and still
swerving across the lanes of the highway. He was joined by
patrol units of the Fair Lawn Police Department who watched as the
vehicle slammed into the center median, this time blowing out
several tires. The car continued south, riding along the
divider until it crashed into the construction barrels at the
Route 4 & 208 junction and could no longer be
operated.
Through investigation it was determined that the
driver, who was from Oakland, NJ, was a diabetic and had low blood
sugar that would account for his erratic driving, however he also
had a suspended driver's license and a warrant for his arrest on
theft charges. He was treated for his medial condition and
arrested for the warrants. He was also issued several motor
vehicle summons.

Tip Leads to
Arrest for Possession of Marijuana
At 6:57 PM Officer Eric Reamy, Lt. Ralph Molinaro
and Det. Sgt. Fred Stahman were dispatched to the area under State
Highway 208 near the Boulevard, on a report of juveniles under the
bridge, possibly smoking marijuana. When the first officer arrived
he observed three persons walking out from under the bridge, two males and a female.
While interviewing them, they claimed that they were on the railroad tracks smoking cigarettes.
As the interview continued the officer noticed the odor of burnt marijuana. The female, a 17 year old
Paramus resident, stated she drove everyone to that spot to
"hang out" and her car was parked on Berry Place.
At the car, Officer Reamy was joined by Sgt. Stahman and the
driver was asked to provide her license, registration and insurance card. While she was looking for the paperwork for the car, one of the males
with her became very nervous and agitated, and appeared to not want
the officers near the vehicle. When the Officers asked the
operator if there was anything in the car that she should not
have, she voluntarily produced a glass bottle containing a small amount
of a substance believed to be marijuana. The driver stated that the bottle was hers, and she bought it in Paterson,
NJ earlier that evening.
The driver was processed as a juvenile arrest and charged with one count of possession of marijuana under 50 grams. She was released to her parents with a pending juvenile court appearance.

Suspicious
Activity lead to Arrests for Possession of Alcohol & Drug Paraphernalia
At 9:24 PM Officer Mike Taylor was on patrol in
the area of Main Street Park when he observed a maroon Oldsmobile parked on Robinson
Lane, at the corner of Main Street. The trunk of the vehicle was open and there were approximately six juveniles standing by the trunk, removing bottles from a brown bag.
As the officer approached the juveniles scattered and the vehicle attempted to flee the scene.
Officer Taylor was able to stop the car on S. Maple Avenue, just south of Elm Street.
While the officer was questioning the driver, a 19 year old
Hawthorne resident, about what he was doing by the park, he stated
that he was doing nothing wrong and that he had nothing in his trunk and
even offered to open his trunk for the officer. Once the trunk was open,
Officer Taylor observed several bottles of alcohol in a brown paper bag.
The driver stated that he had no idea how the alcohol got there. There were also several backpacks in the trunk, all containing quart bottles of malt liquor.
The driver was arrested for underage possession of alcohol. While
attempting to determine ownership of the backpacks, the officer
discovered a marijuana cigarette and a silver and black pipe, commonly used to smoke marijuana.
Further investigation revealed that the driver
along with the five others that ran (& were later identified
and processed at headquarters) drove to a liquor store in Paterson, NJ,
to purchase alcohol. They then drove to Glen Rock, planning to drink in
Lower Doremus Park.
Once the ages of all the parties was determined, they were charged
either as juveniles or adults for the possession of alcohol and/or
the possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

Specialized,
Reverse911 Computer System, Allows Police to call Residents for
Critical Notifications or Emergencies
Don't
be surprised if you get a recorded telephone call from the Glen
Rock Police Department in the near future.
It's just a new community service tool that has been added to the
police department’s dispatch center (Northwest Bergen Central
Dispatch). The
system, called REVERSE 911®,
is a computerized calling program that allows police to call up to
450 people an hour with a recorded message.
REVERSE 911® Interactive Notification System was
developed by SIGMA MICRO CORPORATION in 1993 to give public safety
agencies and
emergency management groups the technology to quickly contact
citizens in a specific geographic area and communicate vital
information. The foundation of the system is built using a
database of all residents and businesses' addresses and phone
numbers and computer mapping technology for a designated location.
The system programs telephone numbers to be automatically called
to deliver pre-recorded messages. The turnkey system is a
stand-alone product that does not interact with departments’
current 911 programs.
Glen Rock and Ridgewood Police Departments, through their
shared dispatch center, purchased the system with some assistance
of The Valley Hospital Association and are one of the first
agencies in Bergen County region to obtain the
REVERSE 911® community notification system. Most
residents know to call 911 in case of an emergency. The Reverse
911 system allows the police to call residents and businesses in a
potential emergency.
According to Center Director, Robert Greenlaw, the Reverse 911
system saves time and manpower in emergency situations. "In
those first few minutes of an emergency, there is usually a
shortage of resources for the police, fires and EMS
responders." Greenlaw said. "By implementing this
technology, we can simultaneously contact our emergency responders
and tell them to report to their headquarters and send
pre-recorded messages to certain neighborhoods and businesses
notifying them to take shelter, or to take other emergency
measures. The system's software allows a programmer to specify a particular area,
and then send a message to all the listed telephones in that area.
The system can be used to communicate an unlimited number of
public safety events. Whether a department needs help finding a
missing child, needs to warn a neighborhood of a hazardous spill
or wants to communicate about a rash of burglaries to a
neighborhood, REVERSE 911® can help public safety
agencies connect with people when it counts.
In addition, the system could notify residents of potential
water shortages or restrictions, mosquito sprayings or even of an
emergency evacuation of a neighborhood.
Because the REVERSE
911® software is so advanced, police can use the tool
to notify every convenience store in the Borough if there's been a
string of robberies, or notify all downtown businesses if someone
has been targeting the downtown area with check forgeries.
“The plans for how Glen Rock Police will
utilize the system are still being developed, said Chief Steven
Cherry. "We'll tailor it according to the
resources we have and what the citizens tell us they most want.”
One option is to set up a "senior
watch" for older people living alone. Under the voluntary
program, the system would call each person's number at a certain
time every day, and the person on the other end would enter a
numerical code signaling that everything is OK. If there is no
answer, the system could notify a designated relative, neighbor,
or even officers to check-in on that person and make sure
everything is OK.

Officers Assist
Moving Stranded Passengers off Disabled NJ Transit Train after
Engine Explosion
At 4:30 PM Officers Eric Reamy, John Mastick and
Sergeants Jon Miller & Fred Stahman responded to the NJ
Transit train tracks at the rear of 500 Broad Street (Area of
Miller Sign Company) after monitoring a radio transmission of a
disabled train. Officers spoke with the train's engineer who
stated that the locomotive lost power just after clearing Rock
Road, at the Main Line Station. After NJ Transit officials
determined that the problem was not immediately correctable,
officers waited on scene until a new train could respond to
transfer the 60 passengers. While waiting, heavy smoke began
pouring from the train's smoke stacks until a loud explosion
accompanied by a fireball, blew open the doors covering the sides
of the locomotive. While the fire appeared to burn itself
out, officers notified the G.R. Fire Department and escorted the
engineer off the train. Officers and NJ Transit personnel
assisted in leading all the passengers to the transfer train and
no injures were reported. The disabled train was removed
without any complications.
